Given the warmer brighter mornings, I have recently started to run into work again. The distance between home to office door-to-door is about 8.5k. I am nowhere near ready to run all 8.5k of it yet and am only running 5k of it whilst taking the bus and walking the rest.
The most annoying (and dangerous) obstacle about running on the pavement during rush hour is of course the traffic. I find myself having to slow down or stop at every junction, turnings, bus stop, passersby, etc. But after just two weeks of running into work, it seems my time have dramatically improved! Is this because I have been unconsciously doing fartlek or because I feel pressured to get into work on time? lol

I find stopping for traffic/junctions very frustrating but thinking it of a fartlek puts a positive spin on it. I think you're speeding up because of the distances you're doing – if it's mostly aerobic you'll be developing your aerobic base/capacity massively. A great way to fit in your running!
I used to try and avoid stopping until I joined a running club. They frequently stop on a long run. Everyone gets their breath back, regroups, has a drink etc.
I think it’s safer as well. Especially with lots of traffic about. (Or horses, cows, cliff tops etc.)
