I did my first intervals run for a long while this morning and boy am I feeling it now! It amazes me how much more done in my legs can feel after a barely 4k with a lot of very slow jogging punctuated by (progressively more halfhearted as the run went on ) sprints, compared with a slow and steady 8km last week which left me feeling relatively fresh! I could barely get on the bike to go commute to my afternoon classes, which usually doesn't phase me as long as I've had a bit of a gap to rest after getting in from a run. On the whole I enjoyed it though - a nice sunny-breezy morning and I did a very familiar run round my local park which has conveniently spaced lampposts (picture attached, not taken today as I was too busy sweating, but representative!).
Having previously found times intervals a bit of a chore (so many notifications to interrupt my podcast!) I am trying out fartleks - much more my style and it also feels appropriate to use a Swedish method as we live in the south of Sweden ( I get a lot of satisfaction out of the fact that I now understand the name although that doesn't mean I don't still find it funny :p...) Onwards and upwards to Wednesday when I am hoping to fit in my first 9km run.
On another more frivolous note, I am loving my new running leggings which have not one but two large pockets - the luxury! It's the first time since I started that I have been able to run without a belt to hold my phone/keys and its very freeing. Plus thinking forward to longer runs where I might want to take a snack it's good to have the extra space. If only all women's running clothes (/womens clothes generally!) had such a sensible approach to storage....
Hope the rest of you are having good starts to the running week!
