Hi, same dilemma for me! I made the decision to do some hill intervals in today's run. I am going to choose a hill, run up, jog down and repeat a few times!. I'll let you know how it goes 😀
cheers
I did it! My aim was a 4k run starting with the interval podcast and finished with hill intervals. I actually enjoyed it, and felt that l could push myself to run faster up hill. I think because it was a short run l still had energy to do the hill work . I purposely only ran half way up and did 4 repeats. I felt l could have done more, but wanted to feel confident l could do it (and want to do it) again. Not sure l could have made it to the top of the hill yet though!
I think it's important to set small manageable goals initially and then build on it.
I hope you come up with a plan. 😁
Hill work is great.. it is a fact that the more you run them, the stronger you get..
Well the treadmill idea couldn't hurt, but I find the major problem is coping with any sharp changes from flat to incline, which break my rhythm. A treadmill can't simulate that, so hill intervals outdoors are probably the better option. For me, once I've chopped stride length and increased cadence a bit, things usually go OK, on "reasonable" slopes anyway. But of course you have to accept some slowing - so you also need to practice letting yourself go a bit on the downs, to try to make up for it.
It's just sticking with it. I live on a hill so I didn't have any choice.
These days I can actually speed up the hill and take it easy on the way down.
See the hill, acknowledge the hill, once there drop your gaze to only the 6 to 8 feet in front (looking up to the top will only feel disheartening and make it feel harder) reduce stride length, and power up, smaller steps but quicker than you were doing on the flat... you'll be up faster than you can imagine 👍
I run hills a lot to try and get better at them I am surrounded by the darned things so might as well keep plugging away. Got a hill race on a Sunday 💪🏃♀️😃
If you want to practice and have the nike run app there is a hill run especially for the treadmill called rollercoaster. A 20 minute run with the incline going up and down every few minutes. I tried it today and think it's really going to help.
