Went out the other day and did 3.5k up a trail and then enjoyed a gentle descent, being careful to keep the pace down and fully prove to myself that my ankle was both healed and strong. Today I thought I’d try it differently... 15 minutes slow and steady up there, then turn and get down the hill fast. Managed just over 2k up and then got down at 5:16/km and am thoroughly delighted with the result. This could be a weekly run I think, if I keep the mileage for the week down I can keep extending the time going up little by little. 4K in a shade over 25 minutes will do me though as I avoided the hills here like the plague during C25K. I was also impressed that I managed to keep up with a guy who looked like an experienced trail runner on the way down after he passed me at the turn... of course he was probably coming back from a 20 miler, but I didn’t ask so I can pretend that he wasn’t 😂
Hills!: Went out the other day and did 3.5k up... - Bridge to 10K
Hills!
Glad to hear the ankle's healing well, that's a great time too. No more scree surfing!
I've never actually experienced a hill yet, south manchester is flat as a pancake. So much so that the best the local running club can find is the sloped grass verge next to a road for hill training!
I've got a road up onto the moors near my folks in mind for some post 10k training, might be a bit heavy duty for a first time though.
Yeah... I’m using a trail out of Hadfield so I’m really just messing with the smaller inclines before the more serious ones I’m running towards at the moment... but if I keep extending I’ll find the serious ups!
There’s some nice hills behind Lyme Park, and I think that parkrun has a fair bit of up in it!
Well done UNM! Sounds like a great plan - the hills get us all in the end ⛰️😀
Well done! 2k uphill 🥵 brilliant and you flew back down 👍🏻
Go you... well done!
Slow and steady... well, for half of it... without that mindset I wouldn’t have had much left for the way down.
I am getting slower and steadier each week, as I approach my HM. I'll be going backwards soon! x
If you run the HM backwards that would be amazing 😂
I quite like running backwards,,, gives you a whole new perspective on things
Small runner in training and I sent a large part of yesterday afternoon running backwards in their field
Back in the day someone (Ron Hill?) used to say running downhill backwards eased calf muscles .......
Dunno if it was him... he sold me spikes and shoes many moons ago! There’s a guy who puts run every day on a different level!
Prep for Lyme Park? 😁
So it seems... then I’ll have to see about getting a parkrun set up to climb and descend Kinder Scout 😂
With catch nets at the end like they use for downhill skiing!

If this link works, it’s a film of running Parkrun at Lyme park. If not it’s in a post by Jay66UK “first Parkrun”
Steady now, before somebody plans a run up kinder scout backwards....😂
Glad the ankle seems to be keeping up with the rest of the body. That’s some pace you’ve got there- even if it is downhill.
Fantabulous 👍🏃♂️🏃♂️👏
Glad ankle is holding out. Seems that you now love hills... I gave up on flat runs week 7, I now assume that every run is going to have at least one hill and sometimes I’m pleasantly surprised!!
Well done on your hills UNM. 👊 I’ll bet you’ll grow to love them - or at least not dread them! The reward coming back down makes it all worthwhile I think.
I’d love to join the Lyme Park crew, but it’s too far for me - but I’ll be looking out for your report and pics when it happens! 🏃♀️🏃♂️🏃♀️🏃♂️🏃♀️🏃♂️🏃♀️🏃♂️🏃♀️
😁💪👍😃
Well you definitely won't meet me in passing doing hills like that! Unless I'm out for a walk of course ☺ My outdoors is still very much at the fairly flat level - I'm finding Gamesley Woods trail is fab for finding my outdoor legs.
Hayfield Show fell race next then?
I have yet to run, or walk in Gamesley woods... best tick that off soon I think!
I used to live in Hayfield... not been to the show though... how bad am I?
It's a really handy one for me cos the Simmondley end starts approximately five minutes brisk walk from my front door! The whole thing is rather helpfully around 5k, and there's a circuit bit where people do laps too to increase distance. Definitely recommended for a fairly flat run ☺
The show is a great day out actually - I'm usually on a stall, but always gaze in awe at all the wiry fell runners silhouetted on the skyline running over the tops!!
