In the last 500m of yesterdayโs Parkrun I slowly passed a 10 year old girl running with her dad - so I made some remarks to her Dad to encourage her along ๐.
However, in the last 100m where people cheer all the runners home, I suddenly heard the cheering increase behind me - โDarn itโ, I thought, โI bet that kid has made an amazing recovery and is now racing towards the finish line and Iโll be overtaken at any moment ๐ณ.
I suddenly had an unexpected surge in energy and ran the fastest I have ever done since starting C25K - crossing the line 4 seconds ahead of her and her Dad ๐.
Ok - not so proud of feeling competitive towards a 10 year old, but well proud of that sprint! ๐.
Earlier 2 kids had stopped to get something out of bag and when they restarted they were weaving in and out of the adults as they raced by. A woman my age (60+) looked at me sadly and said โI wish ....โ. My worst is being overtaken by buggy pushers!
Parkrun is just brilliant isnโt it, I just love it, all ages, all abilities, just getting together to get active, thereโs a little girl (certainly canโt be more than about 10) at ours who chats continuously as she sails past us all.......I wish my legs could move like that!
Well that's what it's all about, you could have achieved a PB because of that last 100 metres, if that girl and her dad had not been there you would just have strolled that last part instead of sprinting, well done if you did achieve a PB. ๐
Our local Parkrun (Chippenham) has Strava segments for the last 100m , 200m and 400m and I tend to do well on the last 100m. It's mainly that I know I can't compete over 5k but my 100m times are very competitive so I tend to go for it at the end. But it does worry me that it looks a bit odd and sad -> Old fat bloke in Lycra scaring children, dogs and the timekeepers.
