Knee Care

Over the last few days, my knees have been aching whilst going up stairs, could this be due to having a heavy cold or running too often? Is resting likely to fix this?

Last Sunday, I went for a 9K run as usual but changed my route so that I did the hill climb 3 times (instead of once). The following day, my thigh muscles ached a bit (the kind of ache that I get form working out in the gym) but that was mild and I just thought that it meant the hill climbs had worked my muscles. Early on Tuesday morning, I did a 12-minute test (i.e. running flat-out for 12 minutes) which, with warmup and cooldown, resulted in me covering 4.4K (I usually run 5K or 6K as a short run). Although the sniffle that I’d had for a week or so was getting worse, I joined the Wednesday lunchtime run from work covering 7K at an easy pace. That’s the first time that gone without taking a full day off between runs. Later on Wednesday afternoon, my cold got much worse.

Your mileage seems inconsistent with C25K program. Are you following something else or you’re doing your own thing? Unless you’re experienced runner, freestyle training with longer runs that incorporate intervals and hills can lead to injuries because your body is not used to what you’re telling it to do. My knee and ankle injuries are testament to that approach. Never again.

Ah, you’re onto 10k program, soz. Try not to run on consecutive days yet. Your muscles are still figuring out their ways.

Good advice! Some colleagues said that it’s common to run on consecutive days but I’ve since learnt that I need to have been running for at least 9 months first. I’m (loosely) following an Endomondo 10K speedup plan but tried to include the Wednesday lunchtime run as well. I need to re-plan and stick to taking a day off between runs.

It could be your cold of course.

It also could be that you have upped your hill repeats too quickly. If you are also including speed work at the same time as building distance, the increased hill work, and consecutive running days, you may have pushed too hard too soon.

Maybe rest up a while and see how it goes. Get over your cold.

If you then find you have ongoing knee pain it may be best to see a sports physio sooner rather than later.

Good thinking; I'll wait for my cold to clear then make sure I have a day off between each run and see how it goes.
