Knew this week at work was going to be tough (lots of evening meetings etc etc) and the weather looked to be terrible too - so decided to take a deep breath and NOT RUN 😳!
Knee has been niggling on and off for weeks and though GP was completely dismissive (kind of a what do you expect if you start running in your 40s sort of an attitude) felt after some internet research and a chat with a friendly physio on the playground (a school parent body can have it's advantages sometimes 😉) - that it might be the beginnings of patellar tendonitis.
It actually isn't painful at all while running but tightens up after and had begun to feel particularly sore just beneath my knee when straightening my leg.
So after a week of rest - while I feel a bit stir crazy - it is feeling much better- so am thinking next week (which is also massively hectic, involving an overnight dash to Manchester to take daughter 2 to a uni open day) I might chance another week of rest with lots of stretching (handy exercises from friendly physio parent) in the hope that by the Easter holidays I'll be back to full strength and able to enjoy running in Cornwall.
Still feel sad looking at all my VRB's activity on Strava though and am worried about distance goal I have set for myself and am already missing my weekend run...I'm not a very patient patient!

Best rest when you can Deb...I know you won't like it, but you know it's for the best...youll be well prepared for a bit of tourist running in Cornwall x
Feeling lost without running but at least the weather has been rubbish (think I might have weakened if ot were sunny and spring-like out there) and it would be awful to be by the sea and not able to run...
Now that's something I wouldn't have said a couple of years ago 😂
I can imagine, but the weather's ok if you're a duck so you're def not missing anything there and yes, it would be testing if the weather was cracking the flags, you'll be back up and running by then though x
Very frustrating! Had a similar niggle this time last year but wasn't running so far then - I wonder if running more on tarmac than trails (I hate mud) over the winter takes it's toll?
It is so hard sometimes to follow our head and not our heart but your plan sounds very sensible to me Deb 🙂. Rest up, enjoy your Uni open day and think of Cornwall and the lovely runs you can have there! Take care.🙂
Was really difficult this morning waking up to sunny blue sky - did my exercises outside in the garden as a compromise and might go for a long walk later!
Ah Debs, but think when you do go out there it will be an enjoyable run! So much better than running with the niggles, that could make it worse! I’m sure running in Cornwall will be amazing! Enjoy!! 🤗❤️
You're right about the niggles -'worrying about whether you're doing damage while you're running is no fun. Though it's hard because my knee feels fine while running it's just sore after.
Am taking comfort from the fact that the exercises aren't painful either - think perhaps the knee just needs a bit of rest and strengthening.
Hi DebJogsOn, Sorry to hear that you are having to have a rest from running when it something you (and me) don't want to rest from at all. I am spending far too long on the ic with a hamstring strain. Hope all is soon well.
Sorry to hear about your hamstring! The IC is so frustrating - feel as though I've already missed years of running because of only starting late so any interruption feels like more wasted time 😖. Still I suppose resting now is better than storing up trouble for later!
You have been running a lot, and consistently Deb, so a reset week or two is a good idea, knee niggle or not. I know it’s hard though. 🙁 I know I’m due a reset week, but keep putting it off...It really does you some good though, you will definitely come back stronger (I have in the past). We get so addicted to it though, don’t we?!
A rest will also do your knee some good. 👏👏👏 Running in these windy conditions has not been fun (I hate it), so you haven’t been missing much!
Even top athletes take reset weeks! It is so good for your legs. 😁 I try to take one every 3-4 months now. Exercises in the garden = fab thing to do! I often swim on my reset week.
And yes, for sure, the weather is slowly getting better and you will so enjoy your next run out, Deb. 👍
Can I recommend a support bandage for that knee for a while? Because of injury from a road traffic accident, I need mine. I've forgotten it a couple of times and had knee pain for days, but with it my knee never hurts. this one is brilliant - they have a size chart further down the page and instructions for measuring your leg: amzn.to/2Hqpa98
Thanks Flick - have considered a knee support before but didn't know where to start. I wondered about one of those patellar straps but the physio I spoke to said she didn't really rate them and that people often position them wrong. She talked about trying a sleeve for a bit of extra support - so perhaps I'll give it a go. I was worried they might slip about when running?
