I have a confession to make, I joined this forum after completing c25k with the intention of following the plan here to build my distance up to 10km, but er... Yeah, I had a sore foot after running a parkrun last September that took weeks to ease off properly, so I basically ended up resting for almost the whole autumn.

Then, with aims of doing a 10km and this forum completely at the back of my mind and almost forgotten, I decided I wanted the get my 5km time under 30 minutes, so used the Garmin Coach 5km plan to achieve it, the upshot being that I've ended up doing 10km runs during the longer "easy" runs that it had me doing 😂

It's a different approach I guess, but it's worked for me, has anyone else here got to the 10km mark by going a little off piste?

Oh yeah. I did not train or build up it.

I did 5k, 6k, 8.5k, 10k in December after graduating C25K in November.

Sub 30 minute parkrun also happened in December.

Keep at it Thecko!

What are your running plans now?

I've signed up for the half marathon in Warrington in September, so I have a decent amount of time to prepare for that. I'm also going to try and get in a few properly timed 10km events during that time too, it's a shame in a way that there isn't a semi regular equivalent of parkrun for 10km distances.

I've signed up for the trainasone AI coach service to see how it approaches building up my distance towards the half marathon, I'm wary of just blindly following a pre-set sequence of distances to run and, as a geek/software engineer myself, feel a bit more comfortable trusting in something that analyses my performances so far before asking me for more!

Some friends of mine who are more seasoned runners are also suggesting that I ought to be able to do a sub-60 10km (I did it in 1hr 5 a couple of weeks ago), but it's not a primary goal for me...yet!

Hi Thecko Depending on where you are based the National Trust run a monthly park run style 10k once a month. If you are near Warrington, Lyme Park has one (if you can face the hills!)

Thanks Sandie1961 , I wasn't aware of the Trust10 stuff. Yes I'm not far from Warrington so Lyme Park is definitely an option for me, the Wrexham and Liverpool ones look like they'll be worth an occasional trip too 😀

There are lots of pistes! I did the first five days of c25k and then decided I hated run/walk intervals so just ran through the cues and lo and behold did my first 5k. Two weeks later I ran 10k. Then I read the forum more closely and found I wasn't meant to do that. But it happens. 🤷‍♂️ Some of us take a month to get to a certain point, some of us take three years. We all have our journeys, and they're all different, but all equally valid.
