That ‘is it really only 8 weeks away’ panic!

I had my email through today merrily telling me it’s only 8 weeks until the resolution run. Which I signed up to do the 10K at. 8 weeks.

Remind me why I thought doing the 10K was a good idea?!

I know technically I should be able to bridge in 8 weeks, and technically I’m already running 7.5K however that does require a few walk breaks on the last couple of Ks. But I struggle to run more than once a week and I’m now very much panicing 🙈🙈🙈

Don’t panic!

Ok... worst case scenario you run 7.5k and walk 2.5k in intervals... could you do that last year? Could you have a fun day doing that? Would you be proud of yourself?

Keep working... turn up on the day... do what you can... have fun... get some bling... come home and book another one. Happy running.

in reply toUnfitNoMore

Thank you. Yes you’re right - even if I walked the entire last 2.5K, I couldn’t run 5K this time last year so getting round 10K in any shape or form is an achievement.

As to booking another one. Let’s see if this kills me first 😆

Thank you 😘

I read an article recently about someone who decided to walk-run a HM; every km he would walk for 1 minute and then he was off running again. He was only a few minutes slower than his HM PB and said he had much more fun doing it! 🙃

Hey, well done for doing something positive for you, and running tends to be a really positive thing I find. Now personally I think if you're already doing 7.5k ish, 10k within 8 weeks is very much achievable. Remember, it doesn't have to be fast, and if you need the walking breaks in your 7.5k, maybe try slowing down, or a tip from a ultra-marathon runner friend of mine, don't walk, jog slowly if you can, you will recover more quickly because of the increased oxygen flow to your muscles, something like that anyway!!

Your 10k pace certainly at this stage should be considerably slower than your 5k pace, so don't run a full-speed 5k and expect to extend it to 10. I think the best way is to pace yourself 30s to a minute per km slower than your 5k pace, and I think you'll be surprised how much further you can go. It's also worth mixing up some short speed runs with 5ks at your usual pace, with longer runs at a slower pace, and if you can manage more than 2 runs per week that will also help.

Now I am not by any means an expert, but I think if you slow down, finding that extra 2.5k will be relatively easy. I know for me, I found moving 5k to 10k way way easier than 0k to 5k.

Do keep us posted, and we'll support you as much as we can. Don't forget your stretching too, that will help you get through if you're not constantly fighting tense muscles. You're far less likely to pick up an injury too.

All the best! Neil

Ah thank you Neil 😊 I still find the slowing down thing very hard but that’s probably because I’m super slow anyways 🙈🙈

I have some runs where the jogging slow to recover thing comes really naturally and others where I’m just hopeless at it. Work in progress 👍

You can bridge from 5k to 10k in 8 weeks so you'll be fine. Just keep to your plan and go out and enjoy your running. The weather will warm up a lot over the next 8 weeks so that will make it both easier and more enjoyable. Run/walk is a great strategy – loads of marathoners do it!

I managed 3 X 10k last year and amazed myself by running all the way. From being overweight and unable to run for a bus - I managed to run/shuffle all the way!

Sounds like spare time is tight but ideally try something like this for the remaining weeks:

1. 3-5k X 2 plus 1x 6k

2. 3-5k X 2 plus 1 X 7k

3. 4-5k X 2 plus 1 X 7k

4. 4-5k X 2 plus 1 X 8k

5. 4-5k X 2 plus 1 X 8k

6. 4-5k X 2 plus 1 X 9k

7. 4-5k X 2 plus 1 X 10k

Also if you can't run this much try replace one of the runs each week with a long brisk walk (e.g. to and from work? I used to get off the train one stop early and get a 40 minute walk in before I started work)

Do the outings even if you don't hit all the distances - you will amaze yourself & if you do the training you will still be running the last 2k but those that haven't done the training will probably be walking - however as UnfitNoMore mentioned - turning up on the day and doing it anyway you can will mean you are a winner whatever happens!

They say if you can do 5 you can do 10 and there is some truth in that. But if you do the regular Ks before the day you will be ready and will surprise yourself.

Go for it! :)

Thank you. Sadly there are just not enough hours in the day to fit in 3 sessions a week, but I’ll do my best 😊

Firstly, don’t panic! Take a breath, you can do this. 7.5k is nearly there already. I did my first proper (as in organised) 10k last weekend. I hadn’t done more than 5 miles up until the Monday before I ran it. Nothing like a deadline to concentrate the mind in my case!

Even if you don’t run every step, enjoy the day. Why are you running? If you’re like me it’s for pleasure (not profit!) so have fun. I expect there’ll be loads of people like you and some won’t even have completed a 5k before. Believe in yourself, try to keep going with the training. Weather and dark evenings are terrible at the moment I know.

Confidence is the key - good luck, keep smiling and having fun!🥇😊🏃‍♀️

in reply toKatiepops

Thank you 😊 I wish I ran for pleasure. Honestly I love the social side of it, but running itself is just something I need to do for other things rather than being something I massively enjoy. Sadly!

But I am feeling less panicky for everyones support so thank you!

You’ve had had lots of fantastic replies and advice already DR, and I’d like to reassure you too. 7.5k is already very close to 10k and you have 8 more weeks to pip up those extra 2.5k. That’s plenty of time.

I’m not sure of your running route obviously, but in my case on my first progression to 10k, I’d do my long run on the same route (consisting of a 3.7k loop) each time and add a km each week - so I could visualise where I’d need to run to next time. It really helped and it made me know I could absolutely do it. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Good luck with your training. Keep updating us with your progress and enjoy your running. 😀👊

in reply tocheekychipmunks

Thank you. I live very close to where the run is so I can go and run the route and it’s also the same location as my local parkrun although a different route so that helps 😊

You'll be absolutely fine. I believe that if you can run 7K in trainng then you can run 10K on race day. The atmosphere and adrenaline will push you and get you through.

You have loads of time, just do what you can but I think you could go out tomorrow and run 10K so don't panic.

Running a race is great fun so don't forget to enjoy the whole thing, especially at the end when you get your bling 🏅🙂

in reply toIrishprincess

Thank you, hopefully that’s the case 😊😊

I'm just starting week 5 on Ju Ju's magic plan and my finger is hovering over the button to enter 10k on 10th March which would be bang on graduation. But. . I've been on the he treadmill since Christmas due to work, weather and dark nights etc so not sure if I'm asking too much, or do I need that push 🤔

Dilemmas dilemmas...good luck with your training!

in reply toGingernutter

Do it 😁😁 if you’ve followed Ju-Jus plan I’ve no doubt you’ll ace the 10K!

You'll be fine - honestly! A couple of local runners I know say it's a little shorter than 10k anyway :)
