When I looked out the window this morning I was quite excited at the prospect of running in the snow, but the voice of doom interrupted my happy snow day thoughts, telling me it was too risky to run. Well, who needs gremlins when you’ve got Mr Razouski putting a downer on your enthusiasm to run?
I had an 8km run planned as part of gradual recover to full running fitness and I really didn’t want to postpone. Who knows where my mojo might take itself off to, if I neglect it for too long? So then I did the unthinkable... packed my running kit into my gym bag and asked Mr Raz to meet me at the gym with it later.
After walking into town for a few errands, I then walked to the gym, crunching through the snow in my Timberlands, and at least getting a warm up walk outside.
The dreadmills were lined up inside the door, and I looked at them with disdain. 😒Could I really put myself through this?
It was time to try out my latest playlist - songs from musical theatre and film. And what a godsend that was. The first kilometre was accompanied by Greased Lightening followed by You’re the One That I Want. But then the music stopped. There was no way I could continue... The bloomin’ WiFi at the gym had stopped working, but after a bit of faffing I managed to get my music working, by which time my running machine had turned itself from pause to off, and my 1km progress had disappeared. 😡Then In fact, thanks to the suggestions from many of you in the forums I had an excellent playlist which got me to 5k without too much trouble.
At 5k I started to tire and the track One Short Day from Wicked didn’t help. All that nasal wailing... What on earth was I thinking about when I decided to put that on the list. I should have listened to misswobble who had described Gravity as a crock. Misswobble this was also a crock and I think my brain must have been affected by my chest infection, that’s the only reason I can think of for this aberration. I was almost on the point of switching the machine off and calling it a day... it was just too tedious. And I was getting hot. Far hotter than I would have been out there in the snow. Should I stop or should I take my running vest off and risk running in my sports bra - oh how I wished for that bikini running 👙 suggested by Wimborne yesterday.
By the time I’d finished arguing with myself I’d done 5 and a half k and it seemed daft to stop now. T-Rex came along to help me with my decision to keep going. Ride a White Swan (thanks Mr Hidden ) and We Like to Boogie both used in the sound track to Billie Elliot were just the thing to keep me going, so keep going I did.
The next 2 and a half kilometres weren’t too bad... although I can’t say they were the most enjoyable I’ve ever run. But old tunes such as Cabaret, and Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat (Guys and Dolls) were worth running to listen too.
So I did it, I only went and ran 8km on the dreadmill! Something I said only, a couple of days ago, was pretty impossible . And for my last few hundred metres I enjoyed trying to avoid doing the Time Warp as I ran along.
Feeling a great sense of achievement. 😀

The impossible became the possible for you Razouski on the dreadmill at the gym, well done for completing that 8K, it probably would not have been possible to have done that outside considering the weather conditions
Fab, well done! Mary poppins returns is my current running soundtrack, it takes me to 4 miles. Don't you hate that negative voice in your head, although the battle can often be a great distraction!😊
Wowsers Razouski, massive kudos to you for that humongous achievement. I’ll think of your tenacity while I’m slogging out my parkrun substitute on the treadmill tomorrow morning. I wish it was over already! 😫😫🏃♀️🏃♀️
I’m still quite surprised that I actually managed to do 8k, myself. I started weeks 1 to 6 of C25k on a treadmill, but apart from when I was ill last week I’ve not run at the gym since. But at least I got my run done. 😀
For a minute there I thought you meant you were running with your hula hoop. I was mega impressed as I can't even hula hoop standing still anymore. LOL
I don’t think I’ll be doing it again in a hurry, but I did feel quite virtuous as other people fit on neighbouring machines, did 5 or 10 minutes then got off to find something else to do. 😀
Well done! Going to try my scheduled 5k on gym treadmill . Hate it compared to outside ( why is that?) Have found Slade quite motivating🤔🤔🤔Maybe gives me the energy from my teenage years. Worth a try! Well done again
Slade sounds good. I hope it keeps you motivated at the gym. Has to be better than the noise they pipe out through the speakers at Bannatyne. I sometimes wonder if anyone in the gym actually wants to listen to the gym music.
I am in awe! I am supposed to be doing a 9k today. Current thought is that I am going nowhere. An unforecast load of snow has appeared. I can either be honest and admit that I can't face the dreadmill or make the excuse that conditions are maybe too bad to make driving to the gym a sensible proposition. Either way, I will postpone a decision in the hope of a miraculously quick thaw! Well done Razouski take a 🥇for sheer determination 😊☃️❄️🌨
That's amazing! You must feel great now. Love the idea of the time warp in a bikini on a treadmill! We had 6" of snow and a beautiful woodland walk yesterday instead. Going out for another walk in the sunshine today to lift the spirits. Keep warm & well. X
Our parkrun was cancelled and Im doing Juju's Bridge to 10K so I had a choice of 4, 5 or 8. I thought I would be doing 5 at Parkrun and was reading your post whilst v warm inside. It was a complete motivator for me. I went into the gym fired up with the intention of doing the 8 and, when the niggles set in just after the 5, I kept on going with a spotify playlist of classics like "Hungry like the wolf" and "Love in an elevator".
Thanks for your great post earlier - I can breeze through the other runs this week.
Still not missing being too hot and sweaty and half eaten by mosquitoes. I've enjoyed winter more than usual since getting back. I have more appreciation for it. I will confess to looking forward to easy weather though, when the temp is comfortable and the sun is out 🌤. When I was a kid my favourite days were grey days when the weather wasn't doing anything at all to interfere with my day. Now I like sunny days.
