My On Cloudflyers have developed a wee hole on the top (despite being roomy in the toe box for me). They have also been feeling less springy of late. I have only done 400km in them - is it too soon to change? (Bearing in mind how expensive On are, but I am totally brand loyal and love them!)
I just did 11k in them with no pain, mind.

Ha! But I was just thinking that 400km is not much? I donโt think On shoes are very hard wearing though...hmmm. I shall start stalking a new pair, Alka! xxx
I know...but they are just so darned spendy, these beautiful Ons. I am 90% sure I am going to get new ones. Going to have a chat with the lovely folk at Runners Need tomorrow. ๐ Hope all is well with you, dear MC. xxx
I know, they are pricy but sooooo gorgeous! Who'd have ever thought that trainers could become so important?! It might be worth looking on their website to see if there's any bargains to be had, like I did? I ended up paying about 60 quid for mine in the end!! Haven't flipping run since Tues, life has just got in the way this week as my youngest has been off school with an ear infection and it was Daddycavs birthday yesterday too so I've been birthday shopping all week, so my running will resume either this evening or tomorrow...its a 6k so I need to be prepared xxx
Not a bargain on Flyers in sight right now, MC. ๐ Iโm just going to have to bite the bullet and let the moths out of my wallet! Sounds like you had a busy week - I hope your boy is feeling better, and you get out for a run. 6km? You can do that in your sleep. ๐๐ xxx
ASICS are far sturdier than On, but sadly they just donโt suit my feet. Wish On were more hard wearing! If Iโm getting new โuns, you definitely should too, Deb!
I shouldnโt worry about the wee hole Sadie - UTS does that to his shoes too. In fact our running shop has a service where they arrange for new shoes to be reinforced where runners do this to their shoes.
The lack of springiness is more important so itโs worth trying some new ones out and comparing. Mine are getting thinner on mid sole after only 300 km. Having said that, who needs an excuse to buy new shoes?
Good point, Dexy, thanks. I will go try some new ones this week and see if I can feel a difference (or see if it is all in my head!) I kind of need an excuse - the shoes I love are ยฃ140 a pop! And as they have been so wonderful to run in (like clouds in fact), and I have been injury free (apart from a wee back of knee ligament strain, probably from a random overstride during a run) I donโt want to risk it with a different brand. ๐ xxx
My running shoes all hole on the tops I am told itโs cos of dorsiflexion, where more mature toes point upwards Itโs not a problem until they get very large. I have dumped my ancient kinvaraโs today for that reason More hole than shoe ! I have some socks which exactly match the shoe colour, so you canโt see the hole ๐
If the shoe has lost its bungee maybe you need a new pair. They lose oomph and then you start feeling the road through them
Mature toes?! LOL! Well, at 47 I suppose they are. ๐ But bless them, they have served me well. Thanks missw. Lack of spring is indeed the main concern. ๐ค
๐๐๐ Oh Elfe! You have seen right through me. I just want everyone to tell me I definitely should be replacing these just to justify my new purchase! But in seriousness, I did think 400km was not much for running shoes...but On are notorious for not lasting as long as some. Annoying given the price tag! ๐คฌ Hope all is well with you dear Elfe! xxx
Yes I can see that the length of time is irritating at that price. I guess if they give you comfort beyond any others then itโs worth the cost - it would be good to scamper around the shop in some of the other makes that people recommend and compare. My shoes were noticeably more comfortable than any of the others I tried on and therefore the reason I chose them.
So... looking forward to the photo! ๐
Iโm ok thanks, - getting going again after a persistent chesty viral infection. After 5 weeks of not being able to run in the cold, I joined a nearby gym temporarily. The treadmill is boring & strange to balance on, but so much better than nothing. Looking forward to getting back outside when my lungs stop feeling like they have been attacked with a Brillo pad. ๐
Aw, I do hope your chest is much better soon, Elfe. Sounds like you have had a rough time of it, you poor thing. At least the treadmill runs are keeping your legs in the game, good call.
I went with the Ons after reading a report about heavily cushioned shoes possibly being linked to higher incidences of injury. Ons are cushioned, but less aggressively and are also incredibly light. But their prices are mad. ๐ xxx
One tell-tale sign that you need new running shoes is if the treads, especially on the soles, are worn-out. The soles last longer than the shoe's cushioning and shock absorbency, so if the soles are worn down, it's definitely time for new ones. You should never run in shoes that have worn-down soles.
From what you say, you have at least 2 faults on them, a hole and lack of spring, so what are the soles like? Must be wearing well down, as you're approaching the minimum recommended replacing mileage in them.
So, look after your feet and legs, time for a new pair!๐
Thanks for your reply, Dave. Hard to tell if the soles are worn down on the On shoes, cos if the funny โpodsโ on the bottom. But being a very injury-nervous runner, I think Iโm just going to go ahead and retire these! (But theyโll be good for walks in the summer!) ๐๐
400km is not much. My New Balance 1080s have over 900k on them and the upper looks almost new. The tread is showing some wear but probably ok for at least 3-400km I would say. I find them incredibly comfortable - they are expensive but last well.
In my experience, once shoes are less springy, they are on the way out, and injury niggles will follow if you continue. 400k is probably the limit of a lower profile shoe - you would need something built up like a Brooks Adrenaline to last a bit longer. You are likely to have done far more than 400k in them anyway, assuming you are not tracking walking to the start and walking home. I tend to keep 2 - 3 pairs of shoes in rotation so I can tell the difference. I buy the same brand and shoe type if I can (currently on Brooks Pure Cadence but the darned manufacturers do update the models). My oldest pair were used to train for and run the Great South Run in 2017 and were retired last spring to gym use only. An identical pair in a different colour are now towards end of life and are now only used once every few weeks. Another pair in the more recent version are my go to shoes and are about half used, so itโs getting towards time to buy some new ones and start using them occasionally to wear them in.
Unfortunately pure cadence seems to have been discontinued so I will need to find something else that works for me. When I visited our local shoe shop with Mr Coddfish a few weeks ago they suggested I might try On as a replacement. Will have to see.
Thanks for your thoughtful reply, Coddfish. That makes sense - it they are less built up, then they wear down sooner. They have been a joy to run in - so light you can barely feel them in your feet and so springy (for the first 6 months, anyway!) They have since remodelled the Flyers - hope they still work for me! Hope you find a new pair you love, too. Got to look after our legs and feet. ๐๐
I know you want them Sadie - go get those new shoes! ๐โค๏ธ You can always save these for shorter runs. I have a whole hierarchy thing going with my runnimg shoes. My favourite fitting ASICS arenโt made in the same model anymore, so Iโve even got a new pair of those stashed in the attic! ๐๐ Thankfully my ASICS come up in sales and are much cheaper. Iโm following Flickโs advice that itโs good to vary which shoes you wear! ๐โค๏ธ
Thanks dear MD. So, do you know you are a โrealโ runner when you own more than one pair of shoes and rotate them? ๐๐ I only have one pair, so I am due another! Sadly, On shoes are rarely on sale! But, I am convinced now, so will get new ones this week. ๐ ๐ โค๏ธ xxx
Iโm not sure if these are worth you looking at or not Sadie-runs , but I noticed Hidden mention that Ons worked for her because they were pretty flat (ie no marked heel height rise).
Iโve got a pair of Brooks Womenโs Neuro running shoes (these do come up in sales a lot), which I canโt run in at all, so use them with heel inserts in for walking only. The problem I have is that they are too flat for me, and I do need a significant heel rise for my feet to roll comfortably. (Although I forefoot strike, I only keep that up for about 8k, then switch to mid foot striking. So I surprisingly found the heel drop was still important to me.)
I agree that 400k doesnโt seem like much but if theyโve lost their spring then best be looking for a new pair. The tops of my New balance hybrids were still good at almost 700kbut the tread had wore uneven so now I wear them for work. I canโt believe I almost have 500k on my second pair already! I understand the brand loyalty thing. I have 2 of the exact same pair of shoes and am contemplating upgrading to a trail exclusive shoe this spring but what Iโve been using has worked so well for the last 2 years, especially given my bunions, Iโm nervous to change it up.
I mostly road run, so I guess that doesnโt help with wear? I shall get new ones (yay!) and save my old faithfuls for short runs and walks. Will have a peruse tomorrow - might check out some other brands, but do love the lightness of On, and the hype with these is that less cushioning builds up your leg muscles more (though that could be a load of ole twaddle). I have had 7 months of twinge-free running with my Cloudflyers; these buddies got me to 10k, so I sort of feel I should stick with them ๐. xxx
