Was marshalling at my local Parkrun this morning...it was freezing, wet and windy, my 5 layers of clothing were completely inadequate. Lovely excuse for hot chocolate when I got home though. Looking forward to marshalling in the spring/summer. The runners were so brave...not sure they were enjoying the experience π. Happy running π»
Frozen Parkrun volunteer!: Was marshalling at... - Bridge to 10K
Frozen Parkrun volunteer!
Hey Gran4z!! Thanks to all of the marshalls! I went to Parkrun today and it was pretty wet and muddy. I was very slow, nowhere near a PB, but I was happy just to get there, park (a major fete) and run! ππ½ππ½ππ½π€©β€οΈ
Well done you for volunteering π - donβt worry about the runners, they could have stayed in bed π, which isnβt an option once youβve volunteered π
Anyone getting a PB would be happy! π
I helped pre-event setup at our local parkrun. Tried to keep up with Mrs Katnap (and failed) and both came away with new 5k PBs!

In weather like that you might have been "warmer" running, but congratulations on volunteering.
Well done with the volunteering. Be even colder if not moving much. My local parkrun was cancelled today cos of weather... To icey and snowy in parts.
Iβm sure itβs harder volunteering than running during these winter months! I usually run but volunteered last week, timekeeping, my fingers were frozen!
Well done for volunteering Gran4z- it is much warmer as a runner. Parkrun cannot run without those who give their time.
Thank you for volunteering Gran4z. I didnβt even get that hot running this morning which shows how chilly it was. No snow down here though, just light rain - but the volunteers all looked frozen, especially the ones at the top of the course. π₯Ά π₯Ά
Iβm volunteering next weekend Iβve decided. Weβre out for dinner on Friday and π· will be drunk! Iβll dig out all my layers as itβs supposed to be a cold week. π
I was another frozen volunteer! Was bar code scanning and my fingers froze!!
Well done you. Scanning is good, you get to say hi to the runners...till your frozen fingers make things difficult. Don't like the scrappy pieces of paper or the wrist bands particularly, especially when slightly sweaty π. Happy days π»
I wore disposable latex gloves when I did scanning. I was amazed at the different places where those bar codes are kept during the run! Weβve gone for the credit card type and it seems to scan well. The small tag is laced on our trainers as an emergency resort but it also serves as a reminder to take the main one.
Latex gloves, now there's a thought! Yes I have the credit card type...not sure where I'll put it come the summer π³π»
Yes it's much chillier marshalling than running! There was an icy blast on Hastings seafront this morning, but I warmed up after a while - except my hands, kept my gloves on! The poor marshals must have frozen but were still smiling and cheering. Well done for marshalling! π
I was just down the road at Peacehaven. It's fun volunteering, but in the current temperatures it's not too pleasant, and Peacehaven is quite high up. Have you done the Parkrun there? Happy running π»
I have been marshalling at parkrun for several weeks now due to injury
I love it!
The friendliness, the gratitude of the runners and the ability to give something back makes me feel real good.
Today I spoke to a young lady who had made a new year resolution to get fit and was giving up her first run after just over 2.5. She had tried to run 5k straight off!
I recommended C25k and encouraged her to join the forum for the tremendous support she would get here.
Job well done!
That's great, hope she does C25K, it's brilliant - amazing she had a go.
Hope you recover soon from your injury - I'm a tad injured too...ran too far on Friday, silly, but such is life. So now have to take time out - π¬
Well done and thank you for being a Marshall. Itβs people like you that keep the whole Parkrun community going π
Good on you for volunteering! I decided to run and not volunteer earlier in the week then when Sat morning came round I just couldn't face running in the cold & damp (my excuse is that it does make my asthma worse) so I wimped out. My 14yr old volunteered as usual and despite many layers was soaked and chilly but still cheerful & not bothered by it as the young so often are! Big cheer for all the volunteers & runners enduring the good old British weather yesterday! ππ
Don't blame you, certainly not good for your asthma π. You made the right choice! I was a bit worried about one woman runner, she didn't look or sound good at all, but she said she was o.k. and who am I to argue π.
Yup the kids don't seem to worry about the cold and the wet - well some do...think my 15 year grand daughter wouldn't have even been up and about, let alone out in yesterday's weather, bless!! π
Oh dear Gran4z! I'm marshalling next Saturday so have my fingers crossed for the weather π
Good luck, wrap up warm....think if you're in the UK it may possibly be a tad βοΈπ¨!
