Did a long steady run this morning, ran 11K - loved it, but my right leg didn't! Think I may have to abandon this half marathon plan. I need to allow the leg to recover, then do short recovery runs, eventually do Ju-Ju's plan again and concentrate on ParkRuns and 10k events. HMs are probably a step too far for me - disappointing, but such is life.
Need to replace my shoes though, the sole of one of the shoes has started to fall apart. Exciting๐๐.

Hey Gran4z! Great job on the 11k! So sorry to hear about the pain.
I wonder if itโs a bit like C25K, when upping the time running can result in some pain, but we leave a little longer between runs for recovery. ๐ค Mindful that pain and run shouldnโt be in the same sentence without careful thought and adjustments, but whatever you decide, youโre an inspiration! ๐คฉ
Thank you, Fab450 - think possibly I haven't given myself enough time between graduating C25K, pushing to do the 10k...and on. Time to back track, build up hip flexors and do some X-training. Got a cunning plan in mind ๐ .
The pain may be a result of your running shoes not giving you the right support and cushioning if they are wearing out. Also have you been building up gradually and sticking to the 10% rule? Itโs also important to do some strength excercises on you rest days - low impact though, of course.
Maybe have a few rest days, get gait analysis and then invest in new running shoes and maybe look at the Strength and Flex podcasts/exercises on NHS.
Thank you Razouski. Will get the shoes sorted...did have gait analysis before I bought them, but they are well worn, and perhaps my gait could have changed with the running, don't know.
I had been following the Brighton HM training plan, so assumed it would be OK, didn't work out the 10% rule.
I have sourced some good hip flexor, hamstring and quads strengthening exercises so will work more on them - and thanks I shall check out the Strength & Flex podcasts.
Aww Gran4z, so sorry to hear youโre in pain. I agree with Razouski and wonder whether your trainers are contributing to the problem. They do sound rather ..... erm .... well worn! ๐
Donโt give up on your HM aspirations. Iโm in awe of you even thinking about that distance. You never know, a new pair of runners might put you back on track again. ๐ค๐
Would be fab. if it was all down to the shoes ๐. Didn't really realise how worn they were, likely I've had them longer than I thought...so yes, well worn indeed ๐ณ.
Think I do need to back track and build up more gently. Do some C25K runs with my friend Michael Johnson, and do some hip flexor/strengthening work.
I think probably I've been doing too much too soon - and forgetting my age too! Only a number ๐. I probably graduated about the same time as you, too.
I'm going to do a few C25K jaunts to ease back gently, lots of hip, quads, hamstrings strengthening exercises, and try to be sensible ๐.
Yup, shoes falling to bits means buying new ones - exciting!! Didn't realise how worn they were. Strange to get excited about shopping for sports wear, think some strange entity has inhabited my body ๐ณ๐. Happy days๐ป
It's probably your shoes. Rest up, get gait analysis done and try again with new shoes. Stretch after each run, cross train and check your pace, keeping it slow until you get used to the distance.
Such amazing support and advice I've received here. Thank you too for yours Irishprincess.
The shoes are more worn than I realised.
Been doing the stretches, started to slow the pace...only recently started to do the X-training.
Will be slowing down, working hard on the strengthening, rest up a bit, then take a slow route back, and buying new shoes next week ๐๐ป
Sorry to hear that, but your shoes may give you a clue as to why your leg is hurting! Tut tut, replace shoes every 300 to 500 miles, NOT when they are falling apart ๐ณ Iโve learned the value of Epsom salt baths thanks to ju-ju- and others, plus rollering. I hope itโs better soon, but donโt abandon the plan, just rest and recover xx
Hi FlickM3, thank you for the support. As mentioned elsewhere, I didn't realise how worn my shoes are...only looked closely when the sole gave up!! I accept the tut tut!
My gorgeous eldest daughter gave me some posh Epsom salts for Christmas so have been enjoying them, twice a week...though I do prefer a lovely hot shower.
Rollering is awkward, but getting to grips with it, and it does help, as do the lovely ice-packs.
Think the plan will just have to be put on hold, think it was all too much, too soon...I've always wanted to run before I could even crawl. So rest and recover, then a gentle ease back - happy days ๐ป
Hope youโre better soon. Exciting having run enough to wear out a pair of shoes. Happy shopping! (I hate shopping and hardly ever go, but have recently visited Decathlon 3 times AND Sports Direct!)
Thank you. Will be good and rest up this week. Yes, shopping is tedious...but Decathlon and Sports Direct definitely are very alluring - think something seriously wrong!! ๐๐๐ป
