Well it all started when I re-did C25K after the little broken leg fiasco. After which, I decided to go for 10K and enter that there Great Manchester Run (Actually Poppypug forced me to do this or threatened to tell people exactly how many pairs of running shoes I have bought). SO I've been doing a twelve week training plan. The combination of dieting down a couple of stone, running up hills and across trails has got my Park Run 5K time down to 26.50 which is brilliant as I never believed I could do it. Today I ran for 60 minutes and managed just over 10K - whoopee - I claim my polished badge, certificate (Signed by Poppypug and if she's not available then The Queen and a cigar (oh no I've given up smoking)! Next sub 2hr Marathon!
BUT,
Dear Agony Aunt,
Saturday I finished a 5K and had a pain down the front of my shin - Today after my long run - it is worse. The man in my local shop (which has very nice eggs) says it is a shin splint - and I should put a spoon in the freezer and then press it onto my shin (the spoon not the freezer that is). I'm sure it will go away if left to it's own devices but I need to run on Tuesday - it is a part of my training plan and I am not allowed to miss it! Are there any Shin Splint enthusiasts out there

Rest, ice and stretch! I would take an easy run if it feels ok which is on a flat route with no hills. The stretch that I have used is to kneel on the carpet with your toenails flat on the floor and gently lean back. I have gently rolled the area with a foam roller too. Are your shoes getting worn at all? Have you increased distance too quickly or do you run on a camber all the time? If you miss one training run it won't hurt. Better to miss one run than to be out for longer.
Thank you so much - I've been driving the last three hours and the old leg felt a tad sore so am about to try the kneeling back thing - if you hear screams you'll know who it is. Really appreciate the help.
Oh no ! What shall we do ?? Stick your leg in the freezer, David !
Aw I am so sorry to hear this That is such a blow and shin splints are blimmin' painful !
I would be very tempted to knock the planned Tuesday run on the head to be honest and give your shin a rest for a bit. You know you can do the distance so no pressure there .
Take it easy my friend, we cant have the GMR hanging in the balance can we ? Ive booked the after run party . Denzil was busy but not to worry, Little and Large have decided to come out of retirement especially for this gig, so we're good to go !
How wonderful - actually Denzil has cancelled his appearance at Canne so he can come to our party - Little And Large are doing the film festival instead! Ok so take it easy - erm ok then... yeah ok - will do...
hey I notice a shiny new badge - think the Badge Elves have been busy - looking forward to seeing you at GMR - I'll be the one with their shin in a splint :)) xxx
Ah you must've pulled some strings there , top job ! I hope he's polishing up his Deputy Dawg and Cliff Richard impressions , if not , he can just stand there and we can gaze at him in awe and adoration
Yes put your shin in a splint , good idea . Or stick a elastoplast on it or something . It"ll be right
Oh yes I forgot to mention , there's some vids on You Tube for shin splints . They hurt like a biatch , so gently does it . I can practically hear the blood curdling screams from here !
Yes I like the shiny badge - what's the 10 stand for? Erm... yes I'll put a plaster on it - heavens it's just a body part - easily replaced what-ho! Got two of them anyway - could probably hop 10k anyway - stiff upper lip - move on! Right of to climb in the freezer for a good nights shivering! Xxx
Shin splints can be nasty and take a while to heal. I had the first signs of them after my first 10k, where I ramped things up too quickly. I took a week off, and started back a bit more sensibly. They still ache now and then, but I got off lightly.
Thanks JayZee - i think the right leg may be overcompensating for the ex-broken left leg! I shall possibly give my next scheduled run a miss - which means a lie in until 6.30 am!
Sorry to here that monsieur Ru-non! πwe can't have you missing your GMR can we, your public awaits the c25k photo shoot!
I've been lucky enough not to have shin splints yet,but a girl I ran with last night said she has taped hers up for the race and it was working well, though not a long term solution! Rest and ice maybe and a little gap in schedule!
Many Merci's Mme Aliboo - ah it'll be fine - may try the tape thing - but just see how it is in a couple of days - I guess it has had a bit of a bashing recently but then again I've never had shin things before - i probably caught them from someone at work how are you? xxx
I'm ok thanks! My thighs been playing up a bit but seems better this last week or two... got a couple of races booked in to keep me going! Hope your pesky shins behave themselves, you've got poppy to keep up with !πππΆπΆππ
She's a hard taskmistress that Poppypug you know - she's running two 10k's herself! So she'll be lapping me I think!
Sorry to hear about the thigh but sounds like you are recovering - and my leg is a little improved though I've been on my feet all day but hey ho c'est la vie as we say in Wales erm do we say that ?? Xxx
Oh David, 2 x 10ks - that makes it sound such a doddle- Not !!
( I may just make it back in time before you set off )
What are you doing in Wales ? Or are you Lost in France ? Ive got one of those Bonnie Tyler Sat Navs. It keeps telling me to turn around and every now and then it falls apart !
Very good - I like that - I went out running a week ago in my country park and crossed over the wrong bridge and got lost but I think ii was so early that my brain hadn't woken up and didn't notice until I finished running. Hey ho.
First, massive congratulations for 2 cracking good PBs, you must be delighted
Second, Pops is right, step away from the running shoes and let those shins recover. Maybe misswobble will be kind enough to give the the benefit of her shin splints knowledge, because she is da ladyeee in da know about them. In the meantime take care young man, you know it makes sense
Thanks dear Ancientmum. Yes something happened with the old running and things just started clicking into place - it's also difficult to stop when you have a goal or training plan but I did miss my scheduled 40 minute run today - so I have been a good boy. π
Hard to think that I used to do anything I could to get out of running and now I'm doing everything I can not to miss it! It's feeling a lot better today so I'll see how it is for Thursday. π I do like my new badge though. πππ
Hey Poppers - well I hadn't received it by this weekend gone - but I'm working away from home for a bit so I'm not sure. Do you have yours yet ? I would like number 6 - can you arrange that please π Xxx
Let's hope it int a shin splint! You know what a broken leg feels like, well it feels like that. Not straight away. It builds up if you keep running and then hits like a ton of bricks. If it is it means no running. Physio is the treatment as it is down to a weak calf. Ankle drops with calf raises, foot lifts and one minute foam rollering - not on the shin, but on the side of your lower leg but don't roll your knee! You roll up to the knee π Do the exercises really slowly, going up as far as poss and then down as far as poss, wearing your trainers. You can- if you have something both sides to hang onto - do exaggerated ones where you hang outwards off the stair (don't put hand cream on before you do this ) ππ€π
Well it's slowly getting better - and I haven't run on it yet. Going to see what the score is on Saturday. I suppose it's just a matter of listening to the thing. If it is shin splints then its the first time and come on real sudden - thanks for the fab explanation misswobble.
