Have you tried Parkrun? I know they're not events as such but they are free and great fun. Also, sometimes there are free local events. Ask at your local running shops and clubs and gym.

Give me some time to get back from injury and we can go have fun at Stamford park or Hyde park on Saturday morning. Don’t think Stalybridge has parkrun yet.

Which plan are you using? I've recently finished C25K and am looking to move up after Christmas.

I agree with Irishprincess Park Run is a great atmosphere and fun. No pressure apart from what you put on yourself.
