Any of you who have read one of my infrequent posts will know that one of my reasons for starting c25k back in May was an unexpected diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, together with a wish to get fitter following recent retirement at 63. My blood sugar level then was 54 with the diagnosis level being 48 and 42-47 classed as pre-diabetes.
Having completed c25k in July and achieved 10k in October, I am continuing to run 3 times a week – I’ve also changed my diet to reduce carbs and particularly sugar. This has led to a weight loss of about 2 ½ stone over that period.
I’ve recently had my six-month monthly diabetes assessment and my blood sugar level has now reduced to 42 i.e. only one above the normal range. I am sure that achievement has been made possible by the c25k programme and the support from this forum. I am confident that my next blood test will show that the diabetes has been fully reversed!

Nice one Jonathan! Shows what should be prescribed to the rest of the nation! Feels good to have taken control of your health? My aim was to regain my waistline and help blood pressure lower before it crosses the threshold. Fingers crossed 🤞.... Well done you! 👍
Well done, you! My husband had blood sugar levels bordering on pre-diabetic & feels running helps too. We've been cutting back on carbs & hidden sugars too as well as fasting, which I think works brilliantly. Good for you making those changes, hope your blood pressure sorts itself out too. Happy runnings!
Thanks Slinkymalinki. I'm sure you're right about fasting but I've gone for the reduced portion approach - less drastic! Hope your husband's levels continue to be OK.
Thanks, he's got another test next week. I thought fasting would be impossible too (love my food!) but you get used to it and the weight stays off. I do porridge for breakfast which keeps me going till lunch then soup & fruit, dinner is fish or chicken with lots of veg, maybe some almond nut butter on an apple for a snack - about 800 cals like the new diet the NHS is going to offer in the news today.
That’s really helpful Slinkymalimki. Even the nurse doesn’t give such clear guidelines re food choices. Good luck with your efforts. I’m doing it for the same reason.
Thanks. We didn't get any advice either just told to watch sugar intake. Michael Moseley's books make a lot of sense & have recipes. Good luck - it's worth it! 🙂
Oh my, that is amazing, Jonathan! Well done you for turning things around. 😁 I am so impressed. The power of running, eh? And you, for committing to improving your health. Bravo! 👏👏👏
That is absolutely fantastic JonathanP. To turn around diabetes will be life enhancing for you. That is such a brilliant weight loss too . Having changed my blood pressure back to normal within 6 months and coming off medication I can’t praise this running lark highly enough. I wrote to my doctor about how c25k did it and they are now promoting it.
It's highly inspiring to read your post. I was gestational diabetes during pregnancy. I started running without much motivation. It was just something new to try. Just out of boredom. I didn't know I will teach this far. It helps me to stay fit and as I too have high probably of developing diabetes in future, it is first step to prevent it. My biggest fear is I will lose motivation and would just stop doing it one day. Though joining this community and motivation I get here helps me to keep going. Good luck to you with running!
