Getting back on track - advice needed

Good morning.

With the help and support of this group I completed c25k on 17th Aug. Since then I’ve managed two 30 min consolidation runs. Am not up to 5k yet but am planning on keeping running for 30 mins at a time for a few weeks and will see what happens.

But I’ve had a very busy week with one thing and another and haven’t actually done any running since 22 Aug - just over a week. Am not sure what to do. Should I attempt 30 mins again and just see how I go or should I lower my target time for a week or two? Also need to get hydrated, my diet has been poor and let’s just say I’ve enjoyed a good few more “lemonades” than I should. It’s like I’ve been on holiday and am not sure where to restart!!

You’ll be fine doing 30 minutes. I’d suggest once a week running on longer so you reach 5k and doing that for a couple of weeks. Then maybe going longer again. That’ll help your pace come down. You could bridge to 10k.

Thankyou. Will give the 30 mins a go and see how I do this week. I was intending to increase my running time after a few weeks of 30 mins. (Using the 10% rule). As a non runner I feel that I’ve worked so hard to complete 9 weeks it would be a shame to not carry on - then this week off happened and I’ve been worrying about getting back into it. Thanks for your advice. X

You don't start to lose fitness for about two weeks of no running, and you might even find the break has helped. Having said that, don't worry too much about targets. Make sure you're well hydrated, get your shoes on and get out the door.

There's a danger moment for every new runner when it feels like a lot of effort and the habit isn't fully engrained. Don't let it get to you - chin up and away you go.

Good luck and let us know how you get on. 👍

Congratulations on finishing the C25K plan. It’s really hard at the moment during COVID-19 to stay motivated and to watch the diet and drinky poo’s. I’m in the same boat. I’m starting to concentrate on healthy eating and running again. Enjoy your runs, great advice above. Try and get used to running 5K x 3 times per week. Don’t worry about the time. Happy running.

Thankyou. The healthy eating and running has been well and truly flung out the window the last week or so, but am ready to get back into it. It’s not a race and I’ll go at my own pace. Thanks for the advice and hope you too enjoy your runs.

All the comments above mine have nailed it. Don't be too harsh on yourself, it's only a week too. Start to run longer and slower more regularly and hydrate each and every day. You can do it! Lots to be positive about. You're doing great so far 😊

Don’t stress, relax, go for a run, if you reach 30mins, fantastic, otherwise you know how far your body is ready for. Also don’t stress on the 5k under 30mins, go for it if you want, it may also just suddenly appear, or it may be like many of us the fun of the run rather than a random speed is the goal to aim for. Happy running 🤗

Thankyou. This is good advice. Am about to go out and have a go! If I do 30, I do 30! If not at least I’ll have got out the door and back to it. Xx

Delighted you had a good run. Remember this run and how you feel. Believe in yourself, every run counts no matter the distance or speed. Happy running 🤗

You'll be absolutely fine! A week off won't make any difference at all, in fact you might find your next run, with fresh legs, really good!

Did it! Still finding it tough but that buzz when its done is amazeballs. Gremlins appeared in my head bit I told them in no uncertain terms where to go!! 😂😂. I’m not the most confident and need to work on that. I have a fear if failing and then not wanting to do it again. Need to change my mindset. Am sure that’ll come with time. This group is amazing.
