Yesterday afternoon I ran my first 10k race. I graduated ju-ju- wonderful 10k plan in July but had booked the race in May! I wanted to run in memory of my dad who passed away 2 years ago.
Weather forecast had been crap all week for yesterday so this added to my worry if my calf /hamstring niggles would be ok. Then more importantly running attire stress was added to this too!!
Anyway race day came and I was actually calm and excited. The Bournemouth Marathon Festival was very well organised and on arrival the atmosphere was amazing.
Iβd forgotten all my worries and was ready to run. And we were off! Weather was cool but dry. First 7K lovely easy run. Music playing, crowds cheering with familiar faces waving.
Grabbed a bottle of water at 7km and within seconds started to feel sick π€’. Struggled on with waves of nausea. Calf niggle was there in background but easily ignored. Slowed down a bit and nausea seemed to ease. Was it the water??
Last stretch now - Up and down the never ending Bournemouth Pier where my husband and son were cheering me on. Last K was the longest K!!! Ok here we go - deafening cheering as I sprinted to the finish! Well felt like a sprint. ππ»ββοΈπ¬
Woohoo!! Leg started to stiffen up after finishing - but so elated Iβd done it! My 1st race and loved it. Glad when I finished but loved it. π¬ Oh and a couple of PBβs. πͺπΌ
Iβve raised a massive Β£1040 to date. My 1st race dedicated to you dad. β€οΈ

Fantastic Alka - what an amazing achievement in memory of your Dad. And an amazing amount raised too - your dad would be so proud. β€οΈπββοΈπ
Congratulations Ripcurl, Iβm so pleased you got off the injury couch in time for the race. It must be lovely to run between Boscombe and Bournemouth piers without the pedestrians and bikes too. I hope you didnβt have to go up the zigzag path eek π¬
Your dad wouldβve been looking down at you with pride, just like your husband and son.
Well done on your time and your fundraising, you should be very proud of yourself.
Thanks!! Was lovely to run in the same direction as everyone else! Bournemouth Pier did seem never ending to run on. Then running past the finish to double back to finish line was a long last km! X
Absolutely fabulous Alka! So proud of you π€ Sounds like a great experience apart from feeling sick. Maybe it was the water...seems like a bit of a coincidence. Do you normally drink during your runs? Anyway, hope you're not too stiff today and celebrated in style last night. And well done again for raising such a huge amount for your charity. What a lovely way to honour your dad xx
Thank you Sarah and for your support in the run up to the race. Still feel a bit off so maybe coming down with something. π· Very pleased with amount raised. Xx
Brilliant Alka, my VRB/running twin π πππππ»ββοΈπ₯π₯
You must be so proud of what youβve achieved this year, and to cap it all with this race (and those times) is absolutely perfect, especially with the money raised in memory of your Dad too. And I love the photo of the βrunning cyborgβ in full flight π
Enjoy a good rest today, youβve definitely earned it!
Awww thank you Ian my running twin! Very pleased how it went despite feeking off towards the end. No way was I going to walk! Yep itβs been a pretty incredible 6 months.
Thank you for support during this times. Just been down to see friends running the HM. Hmmm do I want to run that far? Jury still out on that one. π¬ x
Hi Ripcurlrana71, So lovely to see this. Well done you! and many congratulations! Your Dad would be so proud and that it was also in one of his favourite places would, I expect, have made it even more special. I expect that you are still buzzing! I do hope that your muscles feel alright. π ππ»ππππ»ββοΈ ππ»ββοΈ ππ»ββοΈ
Well done π what a fantastic time you did it in too! Your dad will be looking down and feeling very proud of you π I hope you feel better soon xx
Well done, Alka! ππππββοΈπ β€οΈ You did brilliantly, and Iβm sure your Dad would be so proud of you. xxπ Glad you enjoyed your first race experience! Those vest numbers look like it was a huge event!
I usually carry about 500-600ml in a hydration bladder in my running hydration vest for my 10ks, and decided to do this for the only time Iβve run a 10k race too. I bearly notice the weight on my back, but it lets me take regular sips of water as I go. I suspect Iβd not feel too good if I downed a load of water at once at a drinks station, but as I also canβt tip my neck back properly sipping from the hose bite valve is a better way for me to stay hydrated without having problems.
Oh dear, if it was just sips then perhaps there was another reason, or you were just having a bad day. Iβd not expect that to make you feel sick unless there was something weird in the water...β€οΈ
Super well done rip. Great time too. Glad you enjoyed it and the crowds didnβt bother you. I donβt stop at Water stations for fear of collisions with reversing runners. I clench a small water bottle. I might have a look at those hydration vests. Well done on raising all that money.
Congratulations, that's an awesome achievement. My 12 year old daughter and I ran the supernova 5k in the evening and the atmosphere was fantastic. I've nearly completed ju-ju bridge plan (which I'm loving ) so can't wait to run a 10k race...maybe see you next year!!
