Woo that was tough. Same route as 6k with 500m tagged on before the turn. I was fine up to 5k and then felt like I was really flagging. 56:26, 8.03min/k.
Cadence shows my failed attempt to do the whole thing at 160bpm. I managed to dance to a couple of songs near the end, more to prevent myself from stopping on the uphills than anything!
Cannot for the life of me remember which track I took Sirens Hill to, but I danced up it instead of running so it mustโve been good. And memorable ๐คช
I now recognise that 8k is going to be tougher still.
Unexpected minor injury. I sweated so much that my shorts were completely soaked. They are like swimmers with a mesh lining. The very tops of my inner thighs havenโt reacted well to it and I have what looks like razor rash. Anti-chafing gel to the rescue.
Whatever run you have next, enjoy it x

Blimey, youโre not selling this. It looks hard.... Iโm still struggling to break through the run for 30 mins, then stop.....well done, running for 56 mins is impressive. Go you! ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ
I ran too fast today. I had been warned. Iโll not make that mistake next time. Like Couch, every week leads you to the next. When you are comfortable churning out 5ks you can do this.
The 8k next week will be my first run over an hour ๐ณ
Great stuff Jay, another important milestone completed
Re the chafing, just one thought (I have, touch wood, avoided any chafing to date) - for any long run I do, I'll either wear compression boxers (Under Armour) under my running shorts, or wear one of my pairs of 2-in-1 running shorts that have that sort of underwear built in. Don't know whether that would be the answer for you, everyone's different, etc etc, but just in case...?
Yeah I think your are spot on, HoagyM. I have Lycra undershorts I wore every run before the heat came. It was much cooler today and I shouldโve considered wearing them. Walking like John Wayne now!
When the going gets tough, the Tough get going! you did it, good for you. What are your plans? Are you going to repeat this run or move on ? Your decision, either way you are a hero, a bit chaffed but a hero for getting to the end of this run.
I ran the whole thing non-stop - the โdancingโ was really just high cadence short stepping to a song to carry me up the hill. My 6k time was 8min/k and this was a tiny fraction slower, so I was just going too fast. Will consciously slow down for 8k.
Loving the idea of you dancing at the end! Well done on getting through it - sounds tough going but you succeeded! And I hope the chafing is feeling better soon - ๐ค
Ouch. I know itโs not the same but I just had a flashback to the rash you got as a child after wearing wellies with bare legs!! Takes me back. Way back!!
Thatโs quite som elevation gain. You should be proud of yourself. I never take any notice of cadence and heart rate till after the run, so when I get to hills I just keep trotting along at my usual slow pace. Slower builds stamina.
Great effort, Jay! ๐โค๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ Youโve got hills, which must be much tougher! I use shorts which have thin Lycra inner shorts too, which Iโm sure stops the chaffing (my shorts are always soaked after running ๐). Iโm planning my 7k for next Monday on my new flat, shady disused railway route...๐ค
Fantastic Jay! I'm not surprised you found it a little tough if you were going at the same speed (nearly) as before, but you still did it ๐ I love the little burble of dancing steps near the end - they just look so excited and happy. I hope the chaffing doesn't last long, and heals quickly.
Wow Jay, that sounds painful. When I was looking at shorts they had girly ones with that type of lining but I opted instead for the 2in1s, with just thin Lycra shorts showing below the short shorts. Iโm so glad I did now. I hope the chafing clears up soon for you. I can see some more shopping coming up........
Well done on your distance running - you are doing great at big school. I am trying to visualise fitting a dance into the run
Hey Dexy5! Itโs settled a lot this morning. I think it was bad heat rash rather than actual chaffing, so I think I had a lucky escape. Lycra undershorts for the long runs in future.
The โdancingโ wasnโt really recognisable dancing - even for an old dad like me! It was short-step, high cadence stepping to get up my steep hill. It was good fun but no doubt looked completely weird...as if I care!
