Tried a backpack

Tried a backpack with 2litres of water/sodium drink tonight on my training run. Just thought I would comment as it has came up in the past.

I usually carry a 250ml squeeze soft pouch with bite valve from decathlon but for longer runs and with the current heat I thought it was finally time to try the backpack I bought some time ago. I had avoided it until now as you look a but technical wearing it hehe.

Well it worked ok, but the sloshing was hard to put up with. Although I had my headphones on, it was embarrassing passing people. Secondly the weight is not to be dismissed two litres weighs a chunk on the back. Maybe next time I will just take 1 litre. But downsides aside it was great to have ready and plentiful water and next time I will put ice cubes in it which should be divine.

Oh the 18k was a killer. Lordi suggested I run to my 10k race, run it and then run home. All cross country. So. I did 😜

Asics fujirados are going in the bin as they are just blister machines and a running hat in this weather once totally saturated is fun to watch drip like a tap in front of your face #grim

Oh thankyou MC. I was a slightly soggy damp warrior at the end of it, not so much fight my way out of a paper bag as dissolve my way through it hehe :). This marathon training lark is quite hard I think, i'm not sure why people put up with it tbh lol.

Omg you’re an absolute machine! Well done! Have you entered any HM races? Maybe a full one next year? I can see you being some crazy ultra marathon runner in the not too distant future πŸ‘ŒπŸ½

Good to know about those back packs, not that I need one yet but I had looked at them as I don't like carrying a bottle in my hand.

Great distance and pace for that distance too - well done.

A timely post. Was thinking after my long run yesterday that I’m going to need better solutions for water and sweat if I’m going to get much further.

The 300ml handheld is definitely not enough, of certainly not in this weather.

Might look at a buff or cap too. I seem to have developed acidic sweat that stings my eyes something rotten.

Great post and epic run. Ice cubes are a bit weird in the backpack I find. They do a great job of cooling the water down which in this heat is great but they are a little cold on the back to start off with, again in this heat it is nice. They make a bit more noise than just water and they raise to the top so I find there is warm water when you start drinking then you get a rush of cold then it is fine but the warm then cold always gets me every time. I still love my backpack though and now even use it without water for my phone and keys. I love the way it gives me a sense of freedom as I run.

Thanks for the tip about the ice cubes. I may just make up the drink and put the whole thing in freezer to chill but not freeze. I read online if you suck out the air through the bite valve you can eliminate the slosh but mine has a pull valve which would let all the air back in. So need to swap for a bite I think.

That's a hell of a run, how long has it taken you to build up to that distance?

pinkaardvark profile image
pinkaardvarkGraduate10 in reply to Visionon

Did 15k back in April and had I tended to build further but life got in the way. So about 6/7 from starting c25k. Did a HM run last month so this wasn't a new distance. Just wanted to describe the backpack.

Wow How brilliant is that?! Love the map gizmo.

Have only ever carried a small full bottle once for a 5k so far...even that was totally horrible.Hoping to reach 10k without carrying anything but mega pre hydration and early nights/early starts I guess are the only way.

Good Luck with it all!

Yes I managed without but got to 10k in feb. I'd take the handheld pouch for 10k in this heat even early morning or dusk. But I hate the idea of a rigid bottle hence the soft grippy pouch.

Ok good to hear your advice thank you. Awsome running!

You should be able to minimise the sloshing by getting the air out of the bladder, e.g.:

Oops just saw your comment above! Could try overfilling the bladder instead, that works pretty well too, although it gets water water everywhere :)

On sloshing - just read a review on amazon advising you turn it upside down and suck the air out before setting off. Might be worth a try πŸ˜€

See comment above 😜 mine has a pull valve which you pull and suck. Unfortunately this allows air in so the vacuum would refill. It was quite a cheap one off of amazon so have ponied up and ordered an osprey hydraulics one from wiggle(cheaper than amazon)

Oops. Hadn’t seen that πŸ˜€

Nice.... I find if you extract all the air you get less sloshing....
