In a last minute decision, hubby and I decided to drive out to the lake so he could get a bit of work done on the houseboat and I thought "Time for a quick lake run!!!" It was sunny but windy. I wasn't sure if the ice would be off the lake or not. The last time we were out there a few weeks ago, that wind was so cold as it blew over the ice on the lake. I tried to plan for any temperature and hoped as I got into the campground, I would be protected from the wind so I wore my ColdGear tights, my long compression socks since my legs are a little achy from Friday's run, my heatgear long sleeve top and thin running jacket. I knew the ground would be mucky so wore my trail shoes and my bright gaiters to keep the dirt out of my shoes....and to keep an eye out for ticks. They should be making their appearance any time now. As we drove over the bridge you could see a thin channel of open water but still lots of ice (a few hours later on our drive home that channel had opened up dramatically). It is hard to believe last year at this time, the docks were hooked back up and our neighbour had his houseboat in the water already. Now the marina is still boarded up, the ice is still on and the water is insanely low. It is tough to say if the marina will be allowed to open as usual this year but our fingers are crossed.
It was a nice brisk warm up walk through the marina parking lot. As I ran past my friend's house on the way to the campground, I heard someone calling my name. I turned around; it was my friend that I hadn't seen since we had to practice social distancing running in her Birkenstock's and jeans trying to catch up with me. It was so good to see her! I promised to finish my run near her house and pop by for a quick hello on the deck while maintaining our distance. Oh how I've missed her! It took all my self control to not give her a huge hug when I saw her, but we behaved and did a virtual hug instead π. She took off back home and I made my way to the campground.
The campground was so quiet and peaceful. All the roads were blocked off, there were no workers, no campers, no heavenly smell of campfires and breakfast like in the summer. I really enjoyed my solo quiet run, weaving through the different loops, checking for ticks whenever I had to go off road. Thankfully no ticks despite forgetting to put on bug spray, just a perfect run out at the lake followed by a short visit with my friend on her deck. I did feel a little guilty having this visit but we were very careful to maintain our distance. It was the perfect little pick me up that I needed heading into the next work week.
