Hello, big schoolers. Apple for ju-ju- the teacher.
So. I’m still slowly building up my post-grad confidence and starting to shift the weight.
Today’s 5k made me realise that I have more distance in me but I don’t feel ready for the 8 week programme to 10k yet. I possibly could try but I don’t want to try and fail or injure myself, so I’m just being realistic about what I can achieve.
Having a flip through my diary I see British Summertime ends on Sunday 28th October. I started running the day British Summertime started in March.
If my 8 weeks B210k ended on Saturday 27th October then I’d need to start big school for the first full week of September, which sounds like fairly good timing!
So that gives me 9 weeks - all of July and August - to get my sh*t together, shed some more excess baggage, progress up to 3x5k a week and on to perhaps 2x5k and a longer run each week in preparation.
I’ll figure out a programme for myself - probably something like first half of July remain at 2x4k + 5k; second half July a 4k + 2x5k, first half August 3x5k; second half 2x5k and a 6k.
Does that sound do-able for someone currently taking 44mins/5k?

Of mice and men 😊. Just commit to keeping on running. The rest will sort itself out and you'll be on the juju loco before you know it and wondering whether to get off and jump on the HM express hehe.
Hi Jay, to my inexperienced eye that looks like a reasonable way to go, but no doubt others will have more informed advice. 😀😊
I think it’s perfectly sensible to take things at your own pace, after all you’re not competing against anyone else 😉 and aiming to get it done by the end of summer is an excellent idea. 🙂
I’m aiming to join big school on Monday. Ideally I’d like to get up to 10k by my birthday on 22 August, but only time will tell how realistic that target is! 😊
Have you knocked up a spreadsheet for this yet?? 😬 You’re definetly going the right way and once you’ve nailed 5k by running it comfortably without stopping you can certainly do the Ju Ju plan.
I’ve found the progression through it easier than C25k. Probably because we’ve learnt how to pace, got fitter and stronger.
Also you can jump on the train anytime. You don’t have to wait for the next departure.
I started on week 2 when the new plan started and the support and camaraderie is there which ever run you’re on.
Take your time and join whenever. What’s the worst thing that can happen?? 😬😬
I think anything you put your mind to Jay is doable- you’ve got the right attitude and are listening to what your body is saying. You’ve made great progress and this sounds like a sensible transition to me.
Jeepers Jay! It's like you take the thoughts right out of my head! I've been thinking this way too. My (loose) plan for now, was to vary my runs and to include one slightly longer run each week. Then when the weather gets a little cooler it would be a good time to start a new challenge with the bridge to 10 k program.
I'm going to take a peek at the bridge to 10k plan, just have a look see. I'm not sure if I'm ready or if I'm ready and I'm just lacking confidence.
You're right though, we don't want IC, we are not out to prove anything by setting ambitious challenges and we are not in a hurry.
I am glad that you feel you could do a longer run.
Thanks - the early weeks of the plan look really manageable (like C25K). The later weeks, less so for me at the moment (like C25K when viewed from day 1)!
Okay, so I went and had a peek at B210k. You are right about the early weeks look manageable. I'm thinking up a few excuses as to why I'm not committing to this, I think my lack of confidence is my big issue, everything else is just an excuse.
You will know when you are ready to progress Jay. Once you have run 5k a few times and managed it well, ( it doesn't have to be every run) you can begin your build up to 10k and using Ju ju's Magic Number plan is a good way.
No need to try and run 6k first, that is what the program is for..a gradual steady progression, safely and structured.
I think your plan to start in a month or so is good.
Maybe have a go at the c25k+ podcasts at some point for something different too..
Ooh... that sounds like a good plan. I might shadow you if you publish your spreadsheets! I’ve decided that this heat, me and longer distance running are a not a good mix. So my idea was to pootle about for a bit until the weather cools down and then see where i am.
I’ll do that next week in a lunchtime at work and put it on google drive.
You'll do fine.. all I would say is I found it helpful to have done a few weeks consolidation (in my case months!) after C25K. For me, the point I started Bridge was the point at which running 5k no longer phased me. Apart from a wee stint on the injury couch (but we'll ignore that), I have had no problems completing the runs. If you're taking 44 minutes to do 5k, don't worry. This is about distance rather than speed, and for the longer runs, the slower speed helps.
I strongly suspect you probably have it in you to go faster anyway, so you may very well find this just happens naturally for you. You probably know this already, but JuJu's plan has a shorter run, a 5k, and a longer run. For me, I found the shorter run (initially 2.5k) brilliant for improving my pace. It's short enough that I can push myself. The 5k is a great tool to measure your improvement over the weeks, and the longer run is great for just having fun. I've found that naturally my pace has increased on the longer run without trying, and the trick is to run at a speed well within my ability, and enjoy it.
Well done!, Like Ripcurlrana71 said you can jump on the train anytime and give it a go. Think I've been doing week 3 for about 3 or 4 weeks now due to various injuries and niggles, but finally completed it this week and I'm off again on week 4 hopefully from tomorrow onwards. Don't worry if you get derailed at any point it happens to us all, you will soon get back ontrack, OK thats enough railway analogies for now 😂😂😂 Good luck 👍😊
Sounds like a good plan and something similar to what I did after graduation.
I ran three times a week for either 30 mins or 5k, whichever I felt like for about three weeks. I incorporated the c25k+ podcasts into mine too, loved the speed and stamina ones but felt stepping stones was too slow.
Now I’m loving jujus plan and it’s so easy to follow and if you wanted to start it a bit sooner than your sepetember plan you can always repeat weeks. Actually you can repeat weeks whenever you want anyway, you’re doing it for yourself, no one else. I’m taking things a bit slower than the proper plan because I’m not good going out in this heat but I'll get there in my own time as will you 🙂
You looks very sensible. However, sometimes progress comes naturally. Just look at my June Quest. Didn't follow my plan at all, but achieved different goals and it was all good! I didn't set out to do the Magic 10. Ended up doing a 5.7K trying to achieve something else and decided to call it W1 of JJ's plan. Still not sure I am ready or deserve my seat on the bus, time will tell...
I think it'll happen naturally for you too. One day you'll feel like running on and you'll be in the seat next to me!
Also, remember it doesn't have to be 0.5K increments. You've loads of time until September so you could increase your long run by 0.1K every week to begin with.
I’m liking your plan and may just follow it too. I’m a ways behind you but I’m sure we’ll both get there in our own good time. Looking forward to seeing your spreadsheet.
I think your cunning plan sounds great Jay. You should be so proud of what you have achieved this year. Have you signed up for any 5k runs to use your new found skills?
