Tech fail part deux (Pfffffffft!)

So. I couldn’t wait for tomorrow to try for the 6k run of ju-ju’s 10k programme, and having had a day’s rest, I thought “why not today?!” and sprung out of bed at 5:30am.

After my MapMyRun fail, I decided to give Strava a go. Flicked it on and off I went. 9 mins in, I realised I had not yet had a voice cue telling me I had run a kilometre, so, still running, I whipped my phone out to check what the flip was going on. Strava, for reasons unknown to me, was tracking my time, but not distance nor pace. Time = 9 mins 4 seconds, distance = 0km. OH COME ON!!! Have I been running on the spot?! And thanks Strava, but I have a watch that tells me the flipping time.

So, undeterred, I flicked on my old arch-enemy, MMR, figured that in just over 9 mins I must have run around 1.5km, and would use MMR to do the remaining 4.5km of my 6km goal.

The rest of my run was lovely. I had some cracking music on my playlist, including the amazing “Only God Knows” by the breathtakingly good Edinburgh band, Young Fathers. Robot legs kicked in for the last 2k - yay! Not had that in a while. Still going a bit too fast. Never thought THAT would be my problem, but really it is, and it’s bothering me...

Anyways. Run 3 of week 2 done and I feel amazing. Got home, and went into Strava to check what the flip had happened, saved the run and then it chooses to tell me I had run 7.1km. FFS!!! I hope I haven’t done myself any damage.

Anyone know how to turn on the voice/km cues in Strava? I am beyond perplexed. I know I should buy a Garmin or something, but seriously do not have a penny to spare as I am trying to save up to take a sabbatical from work next year.

Sorry for the long post!

Love,

Well done! Yes go into Strava and hit record - then in top left click settings. You’ll then see the auto cue option top right. There is also a auto pause option if you want that on. I haven’t tried a run with that yet. Good luck!

But that’s the mystery, Ripcurlrana, it was on! The auto cue was on! 😬 x

Oh....🧐 I’m not very knowledgeable beyond that and now I’ve gone on bought a Garmin watch ready for Juju’s 10k plan!!! 🤣 x

Hey Sadie, well done! I knew you’d run today... you’re just to keen not to :P I’m having a very lazy morning, I’ll run after my mid morning coffee I think.

Awesome work on the 7.1k, you’re doing great. Is the speed bothering you, or is it just the idea of it? Maybe that’s your speed now because you are fitter?

Ha ha! I couldn't resist! (I ran today so I could have a lazy morning tomorrow).

And thank you! I am torn between being chuffed to have run 7k and worried I have stretched myself too much, too soon. You know how paranoid I am about injury! I managed the speed fine, but again, I worry if I keep this pace up i will injure myself, or not be able to finish the run. I honestly do slow down, but once my thoughts drift and I am enjoying myself, listening to music or a podcast, I speed up without even realising it! Just maybe I am speeding up because I am fitter, but I am fearful if I run this speed for my 8 or 9k, I will struggle and not finish! (Though I have never not finished, so this is a silly fear.)

Anyhoo, given my recent tech woes, maybe I am not running so fast really. Both Strava and Map My Run are lying bastardos.

Enjoy your run, Neil! xx

Thanks Sadie, my lazy morning is today, and given that I went out for a couple of pints with my neighbour last night, something I don't normally do, I feel in need of the laziness :) Seriously, it was just 2 pints. Oh and maybe a hellishly expensive double whisky :P I'm still a lightweight though, by most people's standards!!

Go run! I find running helps a mild hangover. :-) But get lots of (non-alcoholic) fluids in you first. It's a lovely day for it...go before it gets too hot out there. x

Yes boss!!! :P Oh - download pacer and try that, it’s what I use.

Strava did exactly the same to me yesterday. Didn’t have a back up so just run for 30 minutes. On my last 20 seconds strava made an appearance and registered 0.2km in 30 minutes !!!! Like you I have no idea why. 😡😡😡😩

Oh how frustrating this is! Grrrrr. I am going back to Map My Run, I think. :-)

Have to admit it does sound a bit of a nightmare. I've only had my Garmin a few weeks and I love it and now only take my phone when I'm going somewhere off the beaten track . . . Well done for completing week 2 even with the techy problems, I've been slightly derailed by injuries but hopefully back on track with a redo of week 3 after the weekend.

Aw, thanks orangeguy. And so sorry to hear you have been beset by injury. That's more frustrating than my silly tech woes, and I do sympathise, having been scuppered by injury myself in the past. Hope you heal and are out running again soon!

Well done for the tremendous run! It might be worth looking on eBay for a use Garmin. If you don't want something posh, you can pick them up pretty cheaply. I even got my Fenix 5s for half what it was worth, hardly used. But dont listen to me,I have no money at all, a less than full amount state pension, and i still manage to buy lycra! xxx

Thanks! I really enjoyed it, and could easily get into this running longer distances lark. Never ever thought I would feel this way, it is a revelation!

Might have to consider a Garmin or something for a birthday gift (in August, so not too long to wait). I have to save up three months salary in order to take my sabbatical early next year, and that's not easy in London, when most of my salary goes on rent and travel! But it will be worth it to not work for three months. :-) xxx

Enjoy your sabbatical. i reckon you've earned it :) xxx

Wow Sadie-runs ...that is some distance there!!! I think you’ll be ok as long as you rest...poss have an extra rest day if you can resist!! You’re doing fab on the plan, just try & imagine Oldfloss hiding along your route & every now & again she pops out & tells you to slow down...she often comes out with me!! Those tech gremlins are trying their very best aren’t they?? At least they’re not winning, just causing you some frustration....I’m sure you’ll find the right tech eventually...go back to MMR for now & see how you go...think I’m going to take this week getting my ankle back to full strength then I’ll try starting the plan again...I have my chart up & ready & I think ju-ju- said she was starting it again on the 15th & wood out my name down....eeek!! Happy running lovely xx

Hi MC! And thanks. I still cannot believe I ran 7k, and you know, it felt okay. I am laughing about my tech woes now but at the time I was really annoyed! I am going back to MMR next run, as it doesn’t often fail me. I think the GPS has bad coverage in one of the parks I run through, that could be it.

Hee hee! You know me too well! But, I am resisting a run today in order to have two days rest. Going for a nice long walk instead, and will do 5k before work tomorrow.

Good idea to join the 10k brigade at the next roll out, and to give your ankle the chance to fully heal. Please don’t be nervous! It’s really not that bad (the 10k training). You will be surprised...I think you are so ready! Just need to approach it like C25K - slowly, and one run at a time!

Happy Sunday my dear! xxx
