B210K - Week 2 Run 1 Done - Surprisingly tough! πŸ—ΈπŸƒ

β€’22 Replies

Morning fellow running addicts! Should that be "raddicts"? .....

Well... I got up at 5:40 this morning, had brekky, drove to work and ran my route near work. I did the 3k, and from the moment I started running I knew it was one of those challenging runs. It just didn't feel right in any way. Maybe it was the fact that I don't do this route often, and it starts with a gentle uphill stretch. More than likely I was still getting used to the slightly different weight bearing needed with my new insoles. Maybe it was the fact that the music I was listening to was slightly faster. Not sure, but with 3 different things, not surprising I struggled really. However, I did it, and I didn't feel too out of breath or anything.

It's just... that some runs are like that!!

I'm now relaxing before I start work, with a nice cup of tea :)

Happy running folks!

Yeah, some runs are just like that. But, as the old adage goes, β€œa run is a run is a run”, and this run, however β€œugh” it was, will all contribute to your stamina and fitness. Don’t sweat it, buddy. Plus, when a run feels tough, yet you still manage it, you are exercising your mental stamina! So it’s a win really, as we will need mental stamina to eventually get to 10k.

So well done!

I must admit I am avoiding one of my routes that has a long, slightly steep incline. I call it β€œCalf Ruin Hill”, as I am sure that hill contributed to my calf strain (but mostly because I attacked it too fast I suspect). I must get back to that route, as it is so pretty and leads to woods and fields...

Have a lovely restful day! I am going to do run 2 of week 2 tomorrow...😁

Mornin' Sadie!

Thanks for the encouragement, these were all the things I was saying to myself whilst I was running, so I must have been doing something right. and funnily enough, you say "don't sweat it"... it was actually a bit cooler up here this morning, almost chilly when I started running, so I didn't sweat too much, which is fortunate, as we don't have showers at work, just a small hand basin, and if I stand in that, I can't quite bend down enough to get my head under the tap :P

I suppose I did make it deliberately hard for myself, pushing the speed just a little, and because the route had gentle hills. This was calculated though, I didn't expect it to be easy, but I would rather this was on the short run rather than one of the longer ones. And yes, I know speed doesn't matter, but it's one more way to push myself and try and get fitter. I will certainly be slowing down for the next couple of runs, and in fact I'll probably leave a couple of days gap. I'm off on Friday, so that'll be a nice day to do the next one, followed by one on Sunday. Yes I will revisit the parkrun probably a week on Saturday.

Oh - regarding mental stamina, I totally get what you mean. For me these days often the mental barrier is harder than the physical one. I have two strategies: the first is distraction, usually music, and the second is stubbornness, I am good at that :P

I am loving how committed you are to this 10k programme! Inspiring. I am preparing for "mental battles" with the longer runs; have been finding podcasts a good distraction. But…I have never ever run without a distraction, and wondering if I should at least try a "naked" run for one of the shorter ones, just to see what it is like!

Great hearing your update! My runs of late in this god awful heat and humidity have been a battle! As soon as I see the forecast my heart sinks.

Following your progress now! Well done!

in reply to Ripcurlrana71

Thanks :) Yes, I know, the heat and humidity are not helpful. I've been running as early as I can in the day, I still find it tough. I love running in the sunshine, but if I could have the sunshine without the heat, that would be just perfect. Ideally about 13Β°C is perfect for me. No rain though!!

Same here but don’t mind some rain. 😊

Hear hear! I would much rather have rain than humidity any day.

Very well done.

With your time pressures, preparation priorities dictate.πŸ€”

You still run through it.πŸ‘

I have time and getting into all this

perfect prep tips.

Was interested in the tips and I treat a 10K plus like a marathon.πŸ™ˆπŸ˜‚

Longer the run, shorter the warm up and shorter the run, longer the warm up.πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Go the terror team.πŸ€”πŸ‘πŸ‘

Haha thanks Tbae.

I find hanging around on here and the C25K forum really really helps. People are amazing, really encouraging, and really rather clever at times too :)

Interesting for those with busy lives and responsibilities, you should savour a less pleasurable run even more, for getting through it.πŸ€”

I am sure there is a direct correlation between perfect preparation and a much easier smooth run.πŸ€”

Run because we can, and never think of stopping, it’s maybe’s just futile. What a gift to oneself.πŸ’«πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ’«

Kudos Neil!😊xx

Thanks Jan! It may only be 3k but it's a stepping stone to longer runs, I know. And it's also 3k longer than I could run in one stretch this time last year. I still can't quite believe it!

Absolutely Neil...those shorter (recovery) runs are so sweet once you start clocking up the kms...😎

You are doing great...keep up the good work!

in reply to Bluebirdrunner

Thanks Jan, I'll have to take your word for that, as this morning's run was tough, but with 2 rest days before my next longer run, I should be fine - I hope! You're right though, a shorter run is often pure bliss isn't it? Just running for the sake of running... running because you can... running because you have worked for this new fitness level. Yeah, that really :)

Hey Hidden ...exactly, you did it...some runs are just like that...they’re there to test us...sometimes they can feel frustrating & make us think about whether we’re ready to move on to the next stage, but you are Neil & don’t let them gremlins tell you otherwise πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ’ͺ🏻

in reply to Mummycav

Thanks Mummycav , hearing that really helps. It also helps being stubborn I think lol!

Hey Neil, I think your fab, you're doing so well with your runs, despite some not going the way you would have liked. The more you do, no matter how many miles, you are increasing your stamina each time.

I'm presently working on the C25K Stamina podcast and I think it's beneficial too. I lack in stamina, so will keep doing this podcast.

I shall pray for a bit of 13Β°c weather for you, heehee πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘ xx
