Trying to Run Faster -was it worth it? 😏

As time was limited yesterday morning I decided to do a 5km run, but thought I would try increasing my running pace as I seem to have plateaud.

Well that was the plan.

The weather was cooler but not wet and I felt that if it was only for 5km I could surely break the the average of 5.40 per km.

The first 1km after my warm up took me into the park and down past the duck pond. No time to admire the ducks and ducklings as I was really getting into my stride, and by the end of the km map my run informed me that I my pace was 5.10. Yessss I thought, I can keep this up no trouble.

Well they do say pride comes before a fall, but I’d already had my fall last week, so I wasn’t going to do that again, and I carried on at roughly the same pace. This part of the path was pretty flat and although there were some threatening nettles, I kept going, avoiding their evil stings, and at the end of km 2 I was running at 5.05. The third km continued at pretty much the same speed, the hedgerow rushing past me in a blur ( ha ha, ok maybe not quite but compared to my normal pace it felt like it).

I was now really chuffed, at this rate I’d be on track to get a PB, and a self satisfied grin spread across my face...

That was before I remembered there was a hill! Just lurking around the corner. Only a small incline when I’m jogging gently, but having pushed myself I seemed to be low on reserves and the hill loomed up in front of me like an awesome peak. I changed down a gear or two, but that wasn’t enough. I was out of breath far too quickly and my legs were requesting a pit stop. Somehow I bullied them into continuing, but if they’d gone any slower they would have stopped. Even after reaching the top they were still on a work to rule, and remained at a pretty paltry pace.

I resisted the urge to stop at 4km and somehow managed to keep going until mapmyrun informed me I’d reached the 5km point. And despite usually running a lot further my legs just stopped. Just like that. They weren’t interested I. A cool down walk. And I just stood there gasping for air and aghast at my time.

I did manage to get my legs going again, fortunately, or I’d still be there now. But it was a disappointing 27.50min for the full 5km, so no PB at all. I think my best has been 27.30, so I felt all my efforts were wasted.

On the plus side, I did manage to get out in the sunshine with Mr Raz for a 12km walk in the afternoon around Aldenham Country Park, which was lovely, and in the evening we decided to cycle to a local pub for dinner and back again which gave me another 11 km, and a very nice pudding as a reward.

I know I should try to do shorter faster runs from time to time, but I think I’d rather stick to running further and forget about pace.

Interesting post:) Very well done you for a great run... :)

I had similar feelings about maybe speeding up, but after a few outings trying different things, I decided I was built for distance and not speed now :)

I have found at the end of a long run or even a, not so long, run.. . I just have a little burst, now and then... maybe as little as 0/5K or a 1K.. just to let the legs go.. :) If I am ta the coast, it is always along the Esplanade on my way home:) Cannot resist :)

I love the image of you whizzing along past the hedgerows :) x

Thanks Oldfloss, I probably should get a plan, or maybe do fartleks or something. 😂😂😂

My HM plan is helping me get organised.. :) But I did end up designing my own :)

The different things I tried seemed to be making little difference to speed... although I notice, since I have been recording my runs on Strava (only been doing that, since the end of last year),

I am trending faster generally... so the more we do.. it all evolves:)

Lovely post and I would just die for your time.

Not surprised you gasping for air.You are a flyer.Treating 5k like a sprint.

Interesting, talking about sprinters and gasping, have you ever watched the 100meter sprinters take so few calm actual breaths during the race and when they get to the interview they are absolutely gasping.Do not know the science behind that delay.🙈🤔

Will not be surprised when your speed PB is logged.

Wonder Woman flies again.🌟👏👏

Thanks Tbae, I just seem to run at the same pace as I’ve been running for over a year or more.

I’m very similar to you!! I seem to run at a very steady pace and feel most comfortable with 5 or 6 K distances I keep thinking I ought to do shorter faster runs as I keep reading it’s the way to get faster and help with longer runs too! Perhaps I should do the speed podcast again! Think I just need a bit of structure again!!

Glad you’re getting out and about again after your fall!! 😀🏃‍♀️

I’m just relieved that my fall hasn’t put me off running. I thought about doing the Speed Podcast; I’ve done it a few times but I really don’t enjoy it. Maybe we should set up a virtual Speed run, as maybe it would be less awful if we felt we were running it with others. 😂😂

Yes! That would be a good idea!! I’ve only done the speed podcast once and didn’t really like it! I have good intentions then just before I go out the door I just select one of my playlists or a comedy podcast and just do my own thing!! But throughout run i am constantly thinking should I speed up? or slow down, how far will I go etc? I know I should be more decisive!!! Still enjoying it though so that’s the main thing I suppose!!! 😀

Definitely, as long as we’re enjoying it perhaps it doesn’t matter how slow we go. 😀

Great post and well done!! One of the guys at work knocked 30secs of my 5K PB so I went out to see what time I was capable off... I managed to knock another 1:30 off (so 2mins of my previous PB) and nearly threw up!

Was it worth it.... 🤔

I decided yes & no! Loved knowing my body was capable of more. But vowed never again!

Wow, I don’t think I want to make myself sick.🤮

Whaaaaaaat??? 5k in 27 mins Razouski ?? Are you kidding me?? This is an excellent run....absolutely brilliant...how can you be disappointed with this run??? Please don’t be..the blurred hedgerows, your pace...wow this is everything I’d want my run to be!!! I know, I know....you wanted quicker but I am SURE & so are you that without the hill you would’ve been or even remembering that it was there so pacing yourself for it but that route is not going anywhere so if you tried it again I’m sure you would smash it no problem.....

This post is fab, so inspiring...you are def someone to look up to x

Mummycav thanks, you always manage to put a positive spin on things. Today I’m in the fracture clinic so I’m using that as an excuse to take an extra rest day. Mr Raz and I are celebrating our 31st wedding anniversary so I couldn’t possibly run later. 💁🏽‍♀️
