Please add 1k onto this - my Garmin stopped again ...

This is the second time - actually maybe the third, I think it did it on the treadmill once as well - time to reset it. I got to the bit on this route where it usually buzzes the first K and it didn't, so I looked at it and it was on 00. Come to think of it, I don't remember it buzzing at the beginning of the run. I tend to wait for the circle to go green, press start and run when the green arrow comes up - maybe I should wait a few seconds more.

I was going to run further, but I'm very tired today. I did sleep right through without Mr I don't snore waking me, but yesterday was very stressful and active - I walked miles as well as giving the house a major clean and dealing with some sticky problems. And this is where I think it's important to differentiate between gremlins and fatigue. With gremlins, the run tends to improve as it continues, but with fatigue it gets worse. Today it got worse, and when I glimpsed myself in a large window on the industrial estate as I went past, I was doing the old lady shuffle again, which I haven't done for some weeks. I tend to puff along when I'm tired as well.

I would have pushed on anyway if it hadn't been for the technical glitch, but that put me right off. I may not be bothered with competing particularly, even with myself, but I do like looking at the stats - being a geek - so that was spoiled. I think the three bullocks gazing at me contemptuously as I shambled past were probably the last straw(s).

BTW, why is it strapping young chaps running with huge headphones never say hello (unlike all the other runners whose paths I cross). Haven't you heard size doesn't matter, boys?

But you got out there and a run is a run. Don't you just get frustrated when technology plays up? And then you realise, it's only technology, not the end of the world.

Where I run I rarely meet other runners but if I met a strapping young man with or without headphones I might be tempted to throw myself in front of his path and say hello 😉😂😂

in reply to Irishprincess

That made me chuckle. unfortunately my days of throwing myself in the path of strapping young men are well and truly behind me - they would probably run in the other direction as fast as their running shoes would take them!

Yes, I'm quite relaxed about the runs now I've got 10k under my bel. i would like to do a longer run soon, though, if only for the fact that I don't begin to feel the benefits till at least 20 minutes into a run. today my lungs never did clear, and I'm sitting here wheezing - Dennis has been clipped but is still moulting everywhere!

It's true it takes a while to get into your stride and you can't do that on shorter runs. Long runs are very satisfying.

And you're never too old to flirt Flick. My mum is 85 and still flirts like mad with every handsome man she meets 🙄

in reply to Irishprincess

When i reach 85 I shall do the same. It's this overlap time, when i look a lot younger than I am (genetics, cant take credit) but look old enough to be branded a cougar (as opposed to a panther a la ju-ju- ) ;)

in reply to Irishprincess

PS: would it help to wear a bog roll on my head when I'm throwing myself into the path of hapless youths?

Morning Flick, you may not have waited for the green arrow before you set off.... It’s press once on Run and then again to go....easily done, I’ve done it myself and it does spoil the run somewhat 🙄

You got out, that’s the main thing....just another off day which we all have 😊

in reply to TedG

I know that :) and always press run, wait for the satellite to connect, then the circle to go green, then press again and go on the green arrow. One time the watch was tracking and then stopped and didn't save the tracked bit, it had reset itself to 00 even though it had been showing stats as i ran. I think a simple reset may solve it. If not, i shall contact Garmin. i think these devices often play up after an update. x

That's so annoying - mine has done it a few times, mostly I think when it perceives I am not showing it the loving attention it deserves, or if I have been Googling fancier models :)

Your distinction between fatigue and gremlins is perfect. I find that the litmus test for me is what happens when I go beyond twenty minutes. If I develop robolegs for a while (even just briefly) at that point, then all is good. If I don't, I'm probably shattered. I try to make sure that around that point in my run, there is music with a good rhythm on my playlist that will gee me up. If that doesn't work either, something's not right.

Re throwing oneself in the path of handsome young men, you lot all need to get to my gym, where they will throw themselves in your path instead :D

in reply to HeleneCorsa

Alas, mine IS the fancier model. I suspect it’s software related - well, actually it has to be as the hardware is just case and buttons. Either that or it’s losing the satellite.(

I cant run to music, unfortunately. It probably would be good for urging my flagging legs, but I hate it ☹️

Lol, I am looking into cheap flights to Rome as we speak💗💗💗

I think when you run in the great outdoors music can be superfluous or indeed a distraction from the sounds of nature around you which are really pleasant. I didn't use music when I did the C25K programme (or at least not until the longer continuous runs at the end) as I found it inhibited my attempts at finding a the right pace for me. Now I find that isn't such a problem - I can use music to help me find my pace if I so choose but can also ignore the influence quite easily. But I don't find it easy to run on the treadmill without music. Each km seems like about 3km outdoors.

It is very annoying about the Garmin acting up. Hope you find a solution.

in reply to HeleneCorsa

I agree about the treadmill, but I would hate to block out the blackbirds’ song (and the traffic 😳)with music.

Thinking about it, I think it’s more than possible that im losing satellite signal. It makes sense.i think the watch will do a projected tracking if you lose signal briefly, then pick up again when it reconnects, but Im guessing a longer loss of signal would be a problem.

Do you have the auto stop function enabled? Wonder if you're going too slow *hides* hehe

in reply to pinkaardvark

I do, but Ive gone slower without a problem, and it should pick up again when he pace picks up. Anyway, I started reasonably fast but it still didnt record the first K.

Cheaky beggar, I bet youre one of those young men with big headphones 😜

pinkaardvarkGraduate10 in reply to

Nope. Little or no headphones for me and I always wave or say hi to folks I see out. Especially the very old ones, I make extra efforts there :)

I suspect you are running more than I am Flick: I have been flat tack on the end of a spade/cultivator/ rake/ hoe since the last monsoon season ended last week and the new one began today. I actually went to our friendly little Gym yesterday on the way to collect Mrs. Breadwinner from her employ, having borrowed the car for the day. It is where I used to swim; the staff are friends...almost family. I did an hour running on the treadmill plus a few ks of rowing and a bit on the bike thingy: almost two hours of movement and I didn't shift more than 20 feet. Bizarre. Felt good though...although it was pretty warm in there. I confess I do love rowing...I used to do a bit of the proper stuff and wish it were possible to do more. Anyway, the point I wanted to make is that I love to listen to stuff while exercising: I sometimes time runs etc. to coincide with my favourite programmes on Radio 4 or I use audiobooks and podcasts. I find it a good utilisation of time: I get plenty of time to hear the birds and wildlife etc. as I am outside most of day in the countryside anyway...mostly trying to stop said birds and wildlife eating my crops and flowers. Sometimes I listen to music, but only when the mood takes me. I bought a set of good quality Sennhauser 'in ear' phones over ten years ago and they are still working...although beginning to show signs of age. I will replace them soon-when I can afford a mortgage-and am looking at Bluetooth headphones. I'd be interested in people's experience of them.

But if I get the big ones I might not speak to you.

Or anyone.

in reply to Pm3eak

Fantastic response as always, Guv! I should think you stay pretty fit with all the manual work you do: running is the icing on the cake.

I think running without any kind of auditory input via devices helps me think. It’s a kind of meditation.

I have some Bluetooth ear buds. They are quite cheap Chinese ones, cant remember the brand but they had excellent reviews. However, they didnt behave with my phone, they blocked the ringtone and other sounds, including when I unpaired them, so I guess you get what you pay for. Mind you, my first generation Google Pixel is a bit of a pig as far as bluetooth is concerned. The Garmin is the first tracker that has actually worked with it. My Fitbit kept dropping off connection wise.
