Heart murmur

Yesterday I visited my doctor to check my breathing as my last few runs have been a bit difficult in regulating my breathing. One of the reasons I started was to get fitter as I would get out of breath walking and talking. He has told me that I have a slight heart murmur and I am being referred for a scan and booked in for an ECG on Monday. I feel a little deflated as I was happy with my progress so far and don't want to give up. The doctor said to carry on but be mindful of pain or getting too out of breath. I realise the murmur could be innocent as well. Has anyone else any experience?

Go with the flow, and don't scare yourself but don't push your limits until you know what's what. Getting it picked up on and sorted is the most important thing here - I'm glad your GP picked up on it. My son's heart murmur was wrongly diagnosed at birth. We were told that the majority are not dangerous so keep smiling, and keep running - just don't try any Usain Bolt attempts until you get the all clear :)

You just reminded me that I have a heart murmur diagnosed when I was 18. Asymptomatic since (37 years). I had forgotten about it... try not to worry, probably nothing to worry about. Just follow the doctors' advice 👨‍⚕️

Try not to worry! You've done Parkrun in just over 39 mins, that's good going for a new runner! get the all clear and smash that time!😊

Thanks all for your replies. You've all given me the confidence to carry on - I'll just take it easy for the time being. Thanks again.

Carry on running, but take it steady! You have run enough now to be able to listen to your body. If it wants to slow down or stop, listen to it. These things are best caught early and often are nothing to worry about, but it is always best to get them checked

Let us know how you get on.
