doing fine, with my best being under 53 minutes.

Would be happy if anyone who can provide guidance on how to increase the distance to 21k m. This is my 6 months target (hopefully by MAY 2017) but I am in no hurry.

Am doing great with regards to my health - lost over 11 kg in 5 months. BMI down from 30 to just over 26.5.

You can now run 10K - do a longrun every two weeks and increase the distance by 1klm every time -- 21-10=11x2=22 weeks!!! :)

Wow - on all counts, doing amazingly well. Agree with Bazza1234 just increase your long slow run every week or two. I don't run that far myself but it's a true and tried way of increasing distance :)

Wow, great time for your 10k. Congrats!

And yes, just add another km every week or two. Just remember that your long run should be at most 50% and ideally around 33% of your weekly distance, so increase the other runs as well so they follow the long one. Trying to run 5 + 5 + 21 in a (non taper) week is a great way to get injured.

It's also good to throw in a recovery week every 3-4 weeks, where you reduce the weekly distance for that week only by 5-7 km. It gives your body a regular extra break that helps it recover.

Is that right Tomas? I've never heard that... sounds sensible though, maybe that's why I got injured earlier this year?

I've got it from several different articles and books, so yes, I do believe it's a standard advice (along the lines of 10% increase and other generally accepted "rules").

And yes, I wouldn't be surprised if that was at least a contributory reason (makes note to self to monitor Curly's weekly mileage going forward).

When I did my marathon training last year I religiously kept the long run to 50% of total mileage as per Hal Higdon's novice plan that I was roughly following, and despite that the long runs ended up feeling very hard. I think that was one of the reasons I "crashed" and had to take several breaks towards the end of the plan. So on my current training I'm trying to stay closer to 33%, although that obviously does result in some very long weeks towards the end of the plan when the long runs get really long. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it, and so far it seems to work in that the long runs doesn't feel like too much of a struggle.

Last year my longest run was about 14KM, this year will be no different. It's hard for me with the two lives, the two terrains are so different. I'll be happy if I can get to 12KM plus a bit while I'm here in UK ( I have 2 or 3 routes in mind) then when I get back to France 7 or 8 is all that's really feasible.

BTW I ran this past ole clever clogs Baldy, he's also known as SAG (SmartArsedGit) and he wants to know how your longest run can be 33% of your weekly total? He he!

Tell SAG that there are two solutions:

1) you run 3 times a week, each time the same distance, e.g. 5 + 5 + 5

2) you run more than 3 times a week, e.g. 8 + 8 + 8 + 12.

Simplez ;-)

14 km is a respectable distance. It's 1/3 marathon, so definitely one to be pleased with!

Of course, if the advice had been "at most 50% and ideally around 33%" (cough, cough), then 5 + 5 + 8 would also be a perfectly fine solution ;)

I completed my first 10 K for over 16 years. I've adapted ju ju's magic plan to get me to 50 miles...
