If you head out with just a gentle run in mind then you can gauge what you are capable of achieving. Run/walk from the outset so you are not putting pressure on yourself to keep going. Once you know how much condition you have lost you can gradually increase the distance.
I went through this coming back from injury recently. Starting with 2.6k runs and increasing over a couple of months, until now I am back up to my regular 12k weekend runs. It will be an individual process. Good luck.
Glad you are back to where you were. 🙂 I am easing back in after a short break due to a niggly hip - I am really missing my long runs at the moment but I know I will get back to them.

The advice IannodeTruffe has given sounds good. I too, was running up to 12k a couple of months ago but have had to ease up due to a hip niggle. Am now building back up and gauging each run as I go with extra rest days and more strength training. Currently sticking to runs of about 4.5/5k. Good luck.
