Played for and got!

After some hills, a long easy run and some fairly speedy intervals this week (all with rest days in between) I went along to parkrun this morning fully intending to attack my 5k PB (officially 24:12, unofficially 23:58). Knocked 26s off the official time! WOOHOO!

Woo hoo indeed! Just shows what those hills and intervals (especially) can do.

Well done!

Wow! The PBs keep on coming Simon! Well done🙂.

Brilliant - must be a big parkrun if you still came 67th with a time like that. Do you find you're running with some really focused runners now? The time I managed my one and only sub 30min parkrun I noticed the runners around me were very different, and I'd finally got ahead of the mums with children section - not many things worse than being outrun by a 6 year old!

I can only dream of such elusive goals :)

Speed eluded me for a very long time but never say never.. I still come in 85th of around 120 runners, but in the beginning I was close to last...

It's usually low 200s most weeks. We get quite a few tourists (being Stratford upon Avon!), including some very far flung ones: Canadians last week, Spaniards and a South African this week.

I tend to be with the slower club runners and others like me I guess. I was overtaken by man pushing a buggy yesterday.

The buggy pushing runners are a different category, often they're both strong and fast!

Wow that is amazing, you really are a natural at speed....what is your ultimate goal??

Ultimately, sub 20 minutes would be fantastic. Not sure if that's even achievable for me. It's some years off if it is possible.

Going sub 23 is my goal for this year. However, I'm starting my 8 week 10k training plan this week so I won't focus on the sub 23 until the autumn.

I was going to suggest that. I think you could easily. My son started running the same time as me, and his 5k time went from 34 minutes when we graduated C25k to 21.13 now. He has achieved this by intervals, loads of cycling ( that's his first love) and running club. His aim is also to do below 20 ( he's 14 years old now) and he will soon, and so will you :)

Cross training is one thing I have neglected. I really should try and go swimming at least once a fortnight. Cycling is definitely not my thing! I have just bought a foam roller though to help with recovery.

Next goal is sub 51 in the Stratford Big 10k in September - couple of hills in there, but a big downhill too :-)

Agree... My son does a lot of swimming ( he does triathlons) but he does a lot of weights and work in the gym which has really helped.

Again, same for me - cross training is something I don't do at all, save for some push-ups. Really need to look into this. Sub-51 for you should be no problem - good luck!

Wow - if he carries on like that, he'll be leading parkruns in a few years time as he develops physically. We'll be calling him 'Jeremy' soon ;-)

Jeremys aren't very popular at the moment!

I could have written that reply myself. Same goal for me and similar timings. I reckon I've lost a little fitness in the last 2 months, so another push for a 5k PB won't be for a while. My next goal is sub-22 ... - urrent PB is 22:16.
