Hi, I use bovine collagen which has 0.8mg calcium per 10gm. I take 10gm daily in my tea. I think this is a negligible amount and I also take a calcium supplement.
I think it depends on the type of collagen and maybe the brand. I take Vitabright pure hydrolysed bovine collagen peptides powder, which doesn't contain any calcium. I've noticed a positive effect on my hair, but I take it for my bones as it contains the specific collagen (types I and III) needed for bone health.
Thank you so much for your replied. does your collagen you take it make you put more weight ? i was using one i liked it because my weight increased on it but now they stopped selling it unfortunately -
Ever since I started taking it (about 9-10 months ago), the amount of hair I see in the shower after washing it has reduced significantly! That to me suggests that it's making a difference, although of course no guarantee that it's benefiting my bones.
V interesting. Glancing again at summaries of the research, mainly it is done by companies selling the product. So an unexplored area re bone.
Basically it's just a group of all the amino acids and trace minerals needed to make collagen, huh? But it might be effective if we were lacking one of those in diet or had problems metabolising them. Maybe if vegan. Copper might be low in some of us.
I'm going to go through the list again and think harder.
So looks as if copper is known to benefit hair growth - if there is a deficiency of course. If collagen peptides are helping hair there may well be a deficiency, and it may well be that correcting it could help bone.
The first 8 foods rich in copper are rarely in my diet (beef liver, anyone? Weekly smoked salmon?) but pleasingly I see v dark chocolate does it, (and I think that has magnesium too) so that's a happy addition to my day.
