I wonder whether that's 1500mg calcium carbonate, containing 600mg calcium? If you look at the packet, it should clarify that. We can only absorb 500-600mg calcium at any one time, so 600mg is at the limit. Most of us can get sufficient calcium from diet, which is what NICE recommends, unless it's necessary to make up a dietary shortfall, or we're not absorbing well, or with certain medications (denosumab for example) that require a calcium supplement to prevent low blood calcium.

I stopped all calcium supplements a few years ago and focused on calcium rich foods and K2 to get the calcium to go to my bones. Worked like a champ and in 10 months went from osteoporosis to osteopenia.

Do you mind sharing? How long have you had Osteoporosis?

Have you had fractures?

Did you follow a diet?

10 months seems an amazing quick time,

I've changed to full fat milk and yoghurt and have always eaten plenty of greens, nuts and cheese but it obviously hadn't been enough for me, so I'm really interested to hear how you've managed it.

Hi, I don’t know how long I had osteoporosis. I only had my fist dexascan 2 1/2 years ago when I was diagnosed. I have been dairy free for almost 7 years. About 10 years ago I was diagnosed as a normal weight pre diabetic and every year even though I was watching carbs and loosing weight my A1C kept getting worse. A friend that is a vegan nutritionist suggested Igive up dairy. I did and within 6 weeks all my glucose numbers went to normal and I was able to get off all medications.

I was suffering from terrible pains in my hip and back. I fell and and broke my little finger. The X-ray report said I had degenerative arthritis in every joint in my hand. I got on the arthritis foundation’s website and there is a large section about how gluten negatively affects arthritis. My grandmother, her sister and her daughter were almost totally crippled with arthritis so it runs in the family. I do a lot of genealogy as a hobby so I had a report from 23andme that said I had one of the genes associated with celiac so I thought maybe I do have a sensitivity to gluten causing inflammation so I gave up gluten. This was about a year before my osteoporosis diagnosis. In 6 weeks my pains had significantly improved. My sister started sending me lectures and studies which basically stated that the proteins in grains and even dairy are very similar and that in some people they cause inflammation. During this time I read the book “Grain Brain” which relates all dementia to the proteins in grains. At that time I started on some of the supplements recommended. They are similar to the ones in the COMB study. The only one I had to add later was the strontium citrate and only a half dose. I also went to a primarily paleo diet which is no grains and no dairy. I was only one the paleo diet for 6 months when I had the first dexascan. During my research on osteoporosis I learned about the prune study and the COMB study and collagen recommendations. That is when I added them to my diet and 10 months later at the same hospital and machine had a 3% improvement overall. I am now interchanging the prunes with golden kiwis. Just for some variety.

I actually like my diet now that I am used to it. I also add calcium rich foods like collard greens and broccoli into my lunch soups. All my blood reports are great and I don’t have to worry about weight. I still have some pain when I sit too long but it passes with no pills. I have taken a couple of severe falls luckily I didn’t break anything just very black and blue. I only wish I would have learned all this at 40 instead of 65.

I still drink some wine and have dark chocolate do I don’t feel deprived. I can walk and hike miles, do Pilates and yoga. My hip still bothers me on occasion so I don’t feel I can play pickleball or ski anymore, but I do feel I can snowshoe and still enjoy the snow. I would never go on medications unless there was no other alternatives. Anyway that is my story.

Hello GardenerJH. Well done in reversing back to osteopeania.

Does "Worked like a champ" mean you did lots of excercise too, or was it the focusing on the calcium rich foods that worked like a champ?

Also was the K2 a food supplement, if so which one and what quantity please?

My Rheumy took me off any supplemental calcium...due to current studies about the dangers of calcium in the arteries. However, she said consume calcium foods as I wanted. I was instructed to always take Vit K2 and Vit D3 and magnesium glycinate with food. She also runs labs on calcium levels often, Vit D as well. So far my scans have shown arteries to be free and clear of any deposits, and bone density is improving with Tymlos, Strontium.

Raneena profile image
Raneena in reply toOlliemaya

Good luck.
