Taking collagen

Is collagen worth taking? I have been diagnosed with osteopenia and am taking Risedronate. I am also taking Anastrozole after having a mastectomy . I take vitD and K , my diet is good and I walk every day. Just wondering if there’s anything else I can do to improve my bone health. Thanks.

If your tscores are not in the osteoporosis range why are you taking a drug for osteoporosis? Just wondering! The collagen thing is debatable apparently. I guess it can’t hurt and maybe it will help. One daughter bought it for me whilst another daughter said it was useless. Hence my debatable description. It depends who you ask. In my humble opinion, the best thing you can do for osteoporosis you are doing and that is the vitamin K2. Make sure of your calcium, vitamin D levels, etc as well.

I was toldI needed to take Risedronate or Alendronic Acid (couldn’t take that , made me so ill) for my bones , because Anastrozole is a hormone blocker and along with other side effects it would screw my bones up. Just keep researching I guess.

A very close friend took Anastrozole after treatment for breast cancer. She didn’t take any osteoporosis drugs though. She had two DEXA scans - one while she was taking the Anastrozole and the most recent after she stopped taking it.

She didn’t like taking Anastrazole at all - she had a lot of very unpleasant (for her) side effects but she carried on and even took it for an extended period when it was offered to her - she’s been fine since she stopped it and her bones were fine after her last scan.

I started taking Collagen Peptides a month ago. I also started eating prunes daily and upped my intake of greens, like arugula and collard greens. In addition I started on the COMB protocol a week ago. I don’t know if it is improving my bone scans but my back aches and hip aches are drastically improved. I gave up grains a year ago and noticed a big improvement in my hip and back then also. I gave up dairy 5 years ago because it was causing my glucose numbers to be high. So I think everything natural helps but all those drugs have side effects so I stay away from them. I also started making my soups with bone broth.

I also eat prunes every day, make my own bone broth, lots of greens and my diet is good, but was told because of the Anastrozole I couldn’t protect my bones with diet and exercise, needed something stronger. Lots to think about!

I suggest you read the COMB Canadian study where they used micronutrients to increase bone density with zero side effects. I like no side effects.

Lucy I have been asked to reply but not sure I can help. I did take Risedronate for 2 years but have now stopped. I hated taking it and felt it upset me for the whole day but this could have been all in the mind because I hate taking any medication. Personally I wouldn’t take any drugs for osteopenia but you must be guided by your doctor.

I have been on Risedronate for about 15 months, along with that and the Anastrozole I have forgotten what it feels like to be ‘normal’. Don’t like taking them but was told Anastrozole is such a strong tablet I needed something to protect my bones…… it’s such a minefield knowing what to do.

I have been reversing my osteoporosis without drugs. Unfortunately I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Have had lumpectomy and have to take estrogen blocker. Tamoxifen instead of Aromatase Inhibitors due to my osteoporosis although I'm post menopausal. Tamoxifen builds bone. I hate drugs but it's risky to do natural route with cancer!

Hello Justme16, I'm on Tamoxifen, after taking Letrizole and then, because of side effects,Exemestane. However as I refused to take AA my consultant has put me on Tamoxifen as it is supposed to help build bones. I have only been in it for a couple of weeks so I don't know if it will help. However, I walk, exercise, eat a mainly plant based diet with salmon, tuna and sardines five time a week My Dexa scores are well into osteoporosis, so I really do have to do my best to stick with the Tamoxifen. If course there are possible side effects, but I'm hoping they give me a miss.

Hello BellaDid Letrizole cause your osteoporosis? I was put straight on Tamoxifen due to my existing osteoporosis, but yes, all hormone therapy has side effects. Tamoxifen can cause uterine cancer, but Letrizole doesn't appeal to me either for obvious reasons and it's other side effects. I have never taken A.A.

Hello Justme16, yes Letrizole caused the osteoporosis. After three doctors tried to get me to take AA they eventually agreed it does have bad side effects and accepted I was not going to take it. The breast cancer consultant has put me on Tamoxifen, I did put up a lot of resistance, but decided not would give it a try. I'm worried about uterine cancer, but I guess we don't all get them, so with fingers crossed I'm giving it a go.

After listening to specialists talking about bone density online, I decided to start taking Collagen - powder form from pasture fed cows. I'm hoping it will improve my bone strength. But what I can tell you is that the pain I've had in my finger joints for the last three years has suddenly disappeared completely!! It must be the Collagen. I read on the Reviews that other people have found that their Arthritis has improved. I can actually play the piano and do gardening again without pain.

I take marine collagen in my ice cream . I like to think it’s good for my bones. I also take two different calciums, one from cow bones and one from fish bones.

Hi Lucy. Just diagnosed. All a bit frightening but coming to terms with it. The alendronate is giving me very bad throat burn. The Osteoporosis society have recommended risedronate which they said is easier on the symptoms. Are you OK taking this? Need some positive news !
