weighted vest

I’m pretty new to this group but am very grateful to be part of this forum. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in 2017 and started sodium risedronate around 2018. I took it until about 4 months ago when my Endocrinologist took me off to put me on Prolia, which she assured me had no contraindications. Thank God I researched on my own and am determined to stay off drugs. Besides the usual Vitamin D3, I’m taking BoneUp, which contains calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, potassium, vitamin K2 and Boron. I’ve also added Melatonin. I visited an OsteoStrong gym but can’t afford the $179/month fee. Instead I thought I’d invest in a weighted vest and would like feedback from anyone who has been using them. There’s so many options out there. Does anyone have one they’d suggest? I’m short (4’11”) and weigh about 13.5 lbs.

The one I have is called hypervest and the advantage is the individual weights are very small so you can increase the weight slowly. It is quite expensive, I think the price has actually increased by at least $100 since I bought mine - but that was in 2015 and I never expect to have to buy another!

Since you’ve been using it for so long, has it helped your bone density?

I've only had 2 DXA scans, and yes, I was wearing it between the two scans and my bone density improved. :) But I did a lot of other things too. Haven't worn it lately because I've had knee injuries also shoulder issues and found the extra weight hard to manage, but I really must get back to it. Usually I don't notice it when it's on because it is comfortable to wear, but later the rest of my body complains. But knees at least are better now. Weight is not carried on the shoulders, it's distributed over the entire torso, it is more the difficulty of putting it on and taking it off which was the problem. I'll have to take some of the weights out and work my way up again.

I also have a Hypervest which I enjoy wearing. It fits very snuggly and is comfortable to wear. If you can carry weight then it will be good, you will need to be careful not to put too many weights in it.

Margaret Martin talks about weighted vests on her website, it would be worth reading her articles - on her extensive website she talks about all sorts of topics related to osteoporosis and she has some very good exercise videos
