I'm a 60 yr/old female, fit and active, and just diagnosed with osteoporosis (-3.2 on a couple of vertebrae, -2.5 for rest). I'm in the US and was referred to both an endocrinologist and a rheumatologist and both of them recommended Evenity. My insurance will cover, and I have low risk of CV (a main risk). But I'm worried about being the test subject for unknown longer term risks. For example I don't think the rebound effect of Prolia was known for awhile after it was approved to market. Should I get a third opinion? The only problem I'd have with Forteo is having to be within reach of a refrigerator, I'm an avid off-grid traveler. I have never had a health issue and feel overwhelmed.

Bit of worry about Evenity

Hi heyheymary - take your time and do your own research before opening this particular can of worms. Apparently Evenity is only for short-term use for post-menopausal women at high risk of fracturing. Once bone gains have been made, you transition off it onto Prolia - and that presents its own set of issues, i.e. the risk of multiple vertebral rebound fractures when discontinuing Prolia if you cannot or don't want to continue having the shots. I had 2 years on Prolia, lots of unpleasant side effects, and am now on a bisphosphonate as a relay drug to get off Prolia safely. How long I have to be on the relay drug seems to be anyone's guess. It's just a matter of monitoring bone turnover and adjusting medication - and again, when you stop the relay drug - Actonel, in my case - the risk of fractures is a possibility if you haven't got the timing right. So be warned! Once you've started down this path, you can't easily stop. Evenity is VERY new to the market and, like we've seen with Prolia, all the side effects, both short term and long term, are possibly not yet known.
