Evenity injections

Hi, to any one with Osteoporosis whose been advised to take the Evenity (romosozumab) injections for a year , go for it. I have just had my Dexa scan results after taking the monthly injections. I am no longer in the Osteoporosis category. I'm now Osteopenic. My spine has gone from - 3.8 to 2.2, hip -2.10.to -2.0 but apparently the hip carries on building up bone, to 6 months after stopping injections. I'm so happy, what an improvement. I will now start taking weekly Tablets of Risedronate to keep them hopefully at those rates. Not looking forward to taking them but as I'm on steroids for the rest of my life they seem the best one and hopefully the one with the least side effects.

Has anyone taken Risedronate and how were the side effects. My brother in law was on them for a short while and he was ok so hoping I'm the same.

Great news and very positive thanks for posting . I’m starting Evenity next week for a year same as you. Risedronate suits better than alendronic for some people. It should work well following Evenity .

That's good to hear that you were ok on Risedronate. I've read up on the different Bisphosphonates and they all have bad side effects. hopefully I'll be ok like you. Wishing you good results on Evenity.

I had severe dizziness/vertigo!!Had to stop taking alendronate!!

Anyone else feel the same????

Good to hear you were ok on Risedronate with no problems hoping I'm the same as I've read about some horrible side effects. Wishing you great results with the Evenity.

Thanks for your views on Risedronate, hoping all is ok for me as well. Good to hear you're starting Evenity. A little bit of advice, inject into your stomach. I did my first one in the legs and it was very painful my legs went very red and were stiff and very sore, I could hardly walk and couldn't go to work the next day. By pinching the skin up on my stomach (was only time I've been pleased to have a bit of excess fat there) I was able to inject without pain just a little discomfort, I found it easier to lie flat so that I could keep the injection straight and see the fluid going down. wishing you good results with it too.

Interesting that you self inject Evenity. Here in the USA, they require an RN to administer the injections in the doctor’s office.

I get 1 Evenity injection in each arm every month.

Hi, I'm not sure if you know much about the Uk. we have a national health service run by the government. They don't have the money to spend on enough doctors and nurses so that's why we self inject for Evenity and arthritic patients self inject their meds. I had a face time meeting showing how to inject and did my 1st injection being watched via internet. It was ok as I had a phone number to call if I had any problems. In the arm sounds very painful, are you able to use your arm afterwards as my stomach was sore .

Thanks for the explanation, it helps me understand.

My arms get a little sore for about 1 day only. For me, The key to reduce the soreness is for the medication to be released slowly. For example , I noticed that when the RN injects quickly, not only does the medication burn, but my arms get very sore.

Take care

Best Wishes

Thanks for posting this.

Glad to know you had success with Evenity. I started using Evenity, now at month 5, and will finish the 12 month plan.

I get my next DEXA in March, so I hope to get good results.

Best Wishes

I'm surprised you're having a Dexa scan in march as you'll only have had 7 injections. Surely it would be better to wait until the 12th one, as that's when you finish and can get the full results.

Hi, you make a good point. The only reason for having the DEXA in March is bc I get a DEXA annually every March.

I will certainly take your recommendation and do the DEXA after my 12th Evenity injection.

Thanks & Best Wishes to you.

Hi, wow you get a scan every 12 months!!! It's every 5 years in the UK. Because I'm on steroids mine were every 3 years until covid pandemic. it was 5 years when I finally had the one with the horrible results. My consultant said my next one will be 5 years, I reminded him I'm on steroids so I will book a scan in 3 years. Good luck and hope you too have good results in 12 months.

It's not considered worthwhile having a DEXA scan annually because any changes could be explained by the margin of error in the scan rather than actual changes that have taken place. That's why it's usually 3-5 years between scans in the UK.

In my case, it's been worth it. I used Forteo for the max time allowed (2 yrs), the same with Evenity that can be taken only 1 yr. The DEXA I had after Forteo at 1yr showed significant positive results and so did the 2yr DEXA.

I used Prolia after Forteo and my annual DEXA showed that I was maintaining the bone density gains from Forteo for about 5 yrs. However, on my last 2 DEXAs my bone density began to decline again, so I am now using Evenity.

Wishing you Good Health

Hi, I agree, by not having regular scans the decline in bone density can be missed, that's what happened to me. In 2016 after taking Stronteum Ranelate for 6 years my spine was -1.7. I didn't take anything else then and my calcium and vitamin D tablet was reduced to 1 a day. I was due a scan at end of 2019 and as I've already said due to covid I didn't have my next one until 2022., with the -3.8 result. If we were offered them every two years in the UK , I'm sure lots more people could get quicker treatment. It's due to lack of money.

I'm so glad you are getting checked more regular.

All the best

I am sorry you had to experience that. When I was 50 yrs old I asked my primary doctor to order a DEXA, he refused and replied that I was healthy and rarely required medical care. Every year I continued to request a DEXA and each time I was denied. I continually requested a DEXA because I knew that I fit the description of a person that was a high risk for getting osteoporosis.

In 2015, at the age of 58, I had stress fractures in both feet and when they took a Xray of my feet, and noticed strange white pattern in my bones so they ordered a DEXA. Attached are my DEXA results.

After using Forteo for the max period allowed (2 yrs), my DEXA results improved, specifically in the lumbar. Unfortunately after 4 1/2 yrs I have lost some of those gains, which is why I am now on Evenity.

I was recently informed by the Endocrinologist that I can now use Forteo for another year. I will see how I do with Evenity and take it from there.

Blessings

Wishing you wellness.

Hi, 5 years is too long. my first 3 scans were 3 years apart and I was given medications to increase bone density. The 5 year gap missed how the density had reduced. I'm so pleased I was offered Evenity so now my bones have increased I shall insist on 3 year scans

Jemi7266 profile image

Normally a DEXA scan is approved by insurance every 2 years. However, in my case my insurance approves annual DEXA scan because the scan results is being used to monitor if my treatment is working or not. I also get labs done every quarter.
