Hello all, I would like to hear some advices. I am 47 years old, started menopause at 38. Still on osteopenia, but my numbers are worst than last year. Doctor wants to put me on Fosamax and I refuse to take it since all the bad side effects. So I would like what you think, right now I am taking vitamin D, calcium(600 mg) plus vitamin D, 300 mg in the morning and300 and night.
Also I take vitamin K2, magnesium. I walk almost 4 miles 3 times a week. I eat health most of the days. ( i still like my diet pepsi).
Am I doing the right thing? What else should I do? I have back pain, shoulder and neck pain, not sure if it is because of my bones.
Any advice please
Thank you

Have you had a DEXA scan this year and also the previous year to know that your T scores are worse this year than last? Usually DEXAs are offered every two to three years. That is if you are in the UK.
Have you had your Vitamin D level tested as it is quite important to know the result, ideally twice a year because we do not store Vitamin D and the level could well decrease in the winter months.
You are doing good to take the magnesium and K2. I also take a cod liver oil capsule, drink Kefir and only have Vitamin D capsules prescribed (800u) because on discussing my diet with my doctor he agreed I take in enough calcium.
Good on you for the walking, three times a week. I do over 10,000 steps daily and some days many, many more steps. I also do tai chi and stretching exercises, gardening. I would like to work with weights but unfortunately my shoulders will not allow that.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to discuss your back, shoulder and neck pain with your doctor to find out what is going on ie if it is osteoarthritis or linked to the osteopenia or something else.
yes i did my bone density this year and it is worst than last year. I work in the school cafeteria, and do a lot of lifting, i think that is one of the reason why my back hurts.
Hello Lee. I agree with Kaarina, but wonder if it might be a good idea for you to give up the diet pepsi if you can possibly bear to go without it! Some experts believe fizzy drinks might contribute to osteoporosis: webmd.com/osteoporosis/feat...
Also, it's worth checking how much calcium you get in your diet as it's recommended to get as much as possible that way rather than from supplements. It you already get all you need from your diet, you shouldn't need a calcium supplement. Here's a useful calcium calculator: cgem.ed.ac.uk/research/rheu...
Has your GP checked you for any underlying conditions (apart from menopause) that might have caused and/or contributed to your osteoporosis? If not, it's something you might want to ask him to do. Unless you're at high risk of fracture due to other factors (for example already had an osteoporotic fracture, taking steroids), it's unusual to be prescribed medication for osteopenia.
Oh..sorry, Lee2018! It is hormone replacement therapy. I'm 70 and was able to talk my doctor into starting me on it 4 months ago. It has worked wonders..I actually feel like a human being again, and they will help with bone loss, too! I take estradiol/norethrine combo, because I still have all my parts.
