Common cold

The common cold:. I have a cold, nothing to worrying or earth shattering, however to anyone out there, with lung conditions. I have asthma and bronchiectasis, Avoid where possible anyone with one. I started off sniffing,, sneezing by Thursday this week was totally floored. Friday couldn't get out of bed, barely able to breathe, inhalers, nebuliser nothing worked, saw an emergency Dr today, gave me steroids and antibiotics and informed me I should really have been hospitalised, Friday

Thankfully feel more human and ventured out today, very slowly. Do not let anyone say, it's only a cold. Hope others if you are feeling well.

Oh I never just have a cold unlike my other family members who'll get the sneezes tickle cough within a week they're fine. I'll either have bronchitis for atleast 6 weeks, very short of breath, shivery etc. Or, sinus infection a good 4 weeks of pressure, headaches blocked ears lose sense of smell and taste. An it will be 2 - 3 weeks of abs and other bits too.

No it's never just a cold with me either I'm afraid!

Shancock take good care, take all the precautions you can to help avoid a cold and if you do get one. (I am sure you do already) its no good when it develops into other more troublesome symptoms.

A cold is not so concerning to our lungs, although excessively uncomfortable, its what may happen if the cold develops into something else that is the big issue.

I use every aid I can get my hands on to stop that happening and when it happens everything to try and prevent it going to my chest.

Glad you are feeling some better now.

Hi you sound ad if you have a routine for avoiding a cold progressing. I have been recently diagnosed with brobchiectasis and would be very interested to hear what methods you use to stop the cold from going to your chest. At the moment I am using Sterimar (sea water) hay fever and allergies nasal spray,( a steroid sray if I need it)STERIMAR CONGESTION RELIEF , but only for the duration of the sickness, as it contains added copper you want to avoid taking it continuously all year round. Carbocistine and I keep antibiotics at home. I have also started with a salt pipe. Any ideas would be gratefully received! Many thanks :)

Know how you are feeling mine usually come after Christmas luckily we have been shopping a bit each week. Didn't start on antibiotics straight away which on hindsight should have done. By Thursday just gone breathing was a mess weird but felt ok in myself. But could barely walk feel so wobblyi am on larazapan. I do worry and sat down waiting for for my breathing to calm down which seems to take for ever. I'm starting to eat well. But do wish I didn't panic so much hubby has been good. Cooking cleaning. I'm hoping I may pick up a bit more tomorrow. Just have wait for antibiotics to kick in. Happy Christmas every one. Especially having to listen to my little moan.x

I remember catching colds. Sometimes I almost looked forward to them as it gave me a legitimate reason to take time off work and I could loll about on the sofa watching rubbishy telly, sneezing and sniffing my way through tissue after tissue... and ah! Chicken soup! Now a days with Bronchiectasis I dread the invariable migration of cold germs to my lungs! It’s always a song and dance, full orchestra of sneezes and wheezes, fever and chills, aches and pains... and endless phlegm filled hacking coughing. I just want to get sick like normal people!

It took me six weeks to get over my last "cold" without help from GP . Although she could hear how bad my chest was, I have ACOS. (asthma/copd overlap syndrome ) thats the new name for it these days. Seems unless we are in hospital or attending outpatients our illness is of lesser consequence. Hope you are beginning to recover & feel a little better. Take care and Keep warm. x

Glad you're feeling a bit better now. It's taken me 3 years to persuade people at my church I really need to avoid being near them when they have a cold. They do warn me now, so that I can keep my distance and use my NasalGuard Cold and Flu block and my Vick's First Defence.

Obviously we can't avoid life, but here in Stratford upon Avon lots of Japanese tourists wear little surgical masks....maybe need to join and start a new fashion

To us sufferers it is never “ just a cold”

Look after yourself and get well before the holidays next week.

Good wishes

Agreed. I have asthma and bronchiectasis....and a cold! Trying to think positive and dosing up. Threatening to go to chest. Probably moraxella with copious nose dripping! It's a bugger....truly is at this time of year when we all want to enjoy the festive season but it's the worst time for the bugs.....or best time for them!

Look after yourself . Stay hydrated and warm but keep moving if you can!

I sympathise! We had a family get together yesterday. One of my grandsons had a hacking cough and my little granddaughter had a streaming cold. This little girl once sneezed directly into my mouth! eeeewwwww!! I feel awful that I have to keep warning them to keep away from me but I was warned two years ago about the consequences. I have been ill for the last two Christmases and was ill till May this year. people cant seem to grasp this and think I'm being over dramatic!!

Hi Patchpoppy2, I live in SOA too and wonder about the efficacy of those masks. Asthma and bronchiectasis have me in their grip too and a simple interaction with a colleague who had a cold in August has floored me for the past 4 months with chronic back pain from coughing and 4 rounds of antibiotics which I am still on. To say I’m exhausted is an understatement. Take care and keep warm and well. E x

I had to send my neice home on Saturday, her first words were, I wont hug you as I have a cold, she just doesnt understand how bad I have been since having the last one. I will try to do everything I can to not suffer like this again. So if I have to avoid people then I will do, although I will be travelling to Cardiff to see my daughter soon, I will use nasalguard and the like and could end up getting one anyway. Its hard to avoid at this time of year. Irene x

Hi Patchpoppy2

You should ask (or insist that) your GP to give you a scrip for a supply of emergency standby antibiotics and steroids which you can take at the onset of a cold - my last Bronchiectasis nurse told me I should start on the steroids first and then 3 days later take the antibiotics if I don't feel better - anyone with bronch should be given meds for standby - or you will end up in hospital, best wishes

Patchpoppy2 in reply to majji

I do have rescue steroids which I take, but not antibiotics.

majji profile image
majji in reply to Patchpoppy2

You definitely need to have antibiotics on standby - it is the recognised standard of treatment so insist that you are given a prescription which is always renewed after an exacerbation - best wishes.

Maybe you should ask your GP for a rescue pack of antibiotics and steroids for the future. Hope your well soon.

I'm lucky I don't really catch colds...if I do it's just a sniffle for one day only. I avoid people with colds and make sure I use hand wipes a lot especially after using store shopping trolleys. I have zinc and Vit C combined pills that I buy but don't take though my husband does daily and the only time he catches a cold is when he stops taking them.😐. I have severe emphysima, bronchiectasis , type 2 diabetes, high BP. Husband is fit and healthy thankfully.

I'm so sorry for all of you who suffer so badly with cold germs. 💊
