Alternative to Spironolactone

I have been on Spironolactone for 6 months +. It has made a big difference to my heart failure symptoms.

Unfortunately, the drug is causing pain in my breast tissue and I may have to come off it.

Can anyone recommend an alternative to Spironolactone either NHS or Private.

Hi, I had an appt this morning with the HF Team, where it was mentioned about putting me on Spironolactone as it's seen as one of the four pillars for HF treatment along with Entresto and Dapagliflozin which I'm already on. As it happens my Potassium is on the cusp of being too high, so they decided to leave it for now. I've only been on Dapaglifozin for a couple of months or so, but, its made a significant difference to my EF.

30% in March to 46% on MRI 3 weeks ago, I know there's more to the increase than just the Dapagliflozin, but, I get the impression its been a big help. I'm CKD Stage 3b and I've managed ok with it.

If you get the chance you should try it.

They also mentioned Empagliflozin, but, again potassium level ruled that one out.

Like you I was on spironolactone for around 9 months. I’m a male but the pain around the breast area was really bad . I put up with it for a while but it was getting worse. Eventually the cardiologist swapped it to eplerenone, pleased to say that within weeks the pain subsided and now 3 months on it’s gone completely.

same here, except still have minor discomfort from Eplerenone.

Yes, Eplerenone was good but again I reacted to it (skin rash).

Same here, very painful nipples especially. Swapped it for Epleronone or some similar spelling which did the same. My Prof now has me on the dreaded Amiodarone, a dropped the daga drug, the Epler drug and a long term statin. Strangely, without all the side effects I feel a tiny bit better. Time will tell I guess. Stress test mri next for me.

My Doc sent me to a breast cancer specialist (just in case). Turns out it was Spiro causing the pain but the pain would disappear in 6 months time.

Hi I’m on spironolactone and I think it as made my breast 3 sizes larger but I haven’t noticed any pain as such. But I am beginning to hate my big knockers I’m not young anymore. That’s my only issue with it. Recently I have been considering coming off it. I’ve actually been on it for 5 years. In October when I see the cardiologist I will discuss that as they put me on it.

So, what are you on now?

eplernone gave me a painful rash. I would give Spiro a go and see how you get on. It might work for you.

At the moment on ramapril, bisoprplol and.apixaban and have been for past 4 years. I am 84 and just coming off HRT for prostate cancer which has brought its own side effects.

At my last cardio review my heart failure had not changed in an adverse way, my PAF had not been a significant issue so I thought why rock the boat!

As older people seem to get more side effects andNICE do not encourage over prescribing for oldies I thought I would hold the line with what has served me well for the last few years🤷🏽‍♂️

I had the same issue. Doctor sent me to see a breast cancer specialist (just in case). She told me that the pain would disappear after 6 months but the man boobs would not. I decided to stick with Spiro and get a bra!
