I have had to come off Spironolactone (adverse intestinal effects). I am also allergic to the only alternative under the NHS (Eplerenone).
Has anyone ever gone Private and been prescribed a better alternative?

I’m sorry I can’t help with the medication query however, I do have experience of private healthcare in case that is of any help to you. I found that when going private, my cardiologists were willing to try different medications to help alleviate my symptoms when compared to my regular GP appointments or going through the NHS. I’m not sure if going private had a definite part to play in doctors willing to change medications around to see which one works best, but like I said, I did find them more proactive when it came to that aspect of things and you may benefit from going private too.
I hope others will offer their experiences too.
All the best.
Tos
I have been on spirolactone for some years and have not noticed any problems except that I get stomach problems if I take it with beta blockers. I have tried three with the same results so have given up the betablockers.
Could an elevated potassium level caused by the spirolactone be giving you stomach problems. It is a known side effect but I am sure they will have given you a blood test to check this. I was surprised to note that there are a lot of foods which you are advised to limit if on spirolactone.
Hope this helps a bit
Hi. I was on spironolactone but when I was started on beta blockers I was told to come off spironolactone. I had loads of stomach problems but no one said it was caused by spironolactone however since coming off that my stomach is a lot better.
My daughter was on frusomide which I believe is similar to spironolactone. Might be worth looking into that.
