Magnesium and ppis
Do you get indigestion if you don't take them? According to my GP they are not actually prescribed (for heart disease patients) as a cure for indigestion, they are to lower the amount of acid in the stomach, so that in the event of the Aspirin causing an ulcer which bursts, it will not be as severe - a bit like an insurance policy if you like. I have had problems with all of them of one sort or another, the Omeprazole I am currently on gives me headaches which is common apparently. I was under the impression magnesium is thought to be important in preventing heart disease, however you should be able to get it from a balanced diet, things like Dark Chocolate, legumes, Avacado's and nuts are rich in it. I only take the PPI every 3 days or so, I am not convinced they are particularly good for you to be honest, and my GP didn't argue, but I would check with yours.
Thanks, I've got a hiatus hernia i have been taking a ppi for years but since starting statins and aspirin i got indigestion bad and had to increase ppi to 2 a day i have told my gp he said ok,its not good taking ppis for years but what can you do.
Hi, I have a hiatus hernia, took PPI’s and ended up with stomach problems. Changed to Ranatadine which worked, then they were taken off the market, you find something that works and then you can’t obtain it. Pharmacist recommended Famotidine, gp refused to prescribe it on the grounds of cost. Consultant happy to prescribe it so had to add it to prescriptions. I find it much better than PPI’s. Hope this helps.
Dear Raders
I read your post with great interest, but I really think that it should be titled Medication And PPis .
PPis can cause all sorts of problems with all sorts of medication including your magnesium.
With some knowledge you need to work out if the benefits of taking this over the protection the PPis afford you.
I have known of many that have stopped the PPis to benefit from other vitamins etc that they are taking.
PPis are dished out and excepted without question, most are needed, a lot are not. Only your team/Dr can answer this.
Have you tried soaking in a bath with the magnesium in? I use that for restless leg syndrome, but that way may be to weak for your use.
Take care
We must make sure we switch our crystal balls on in future. You are right though, my GP said they are dished out far too much and will prove a big problem in later years. No other medication has given me so many problems I tried the lot before I decided not to take any more.
Whatever you do with magnesium supplements make sure you check with your GP. My cardiologist asked my GP to prescribe magnesium after a blood test at the hospital showed that I was low in it. I have almost finished the course of 50tablets (1 x3 times a day) and been asked to have another blood test. Have been told that I will not be on it forever and my prescription is not being renewed before the test results come through. Does not seem wise to add supplements without some guidance.
