Magnesium for sleep?

Hi,

Anyone know if it is safe to take magnesium to help with sleep, and if anyone has taken it if they had any good results. I've got 4 stents and take the usual after heart attack cocktail of meds, but sleep is not good at all, any advice appreciated

it would be best to discuss this with either your dispensing pharmacist or the pharmacist attached to your doctors group of surgeries.

Hello :-)

Sorry to hear you are struggling with your sleep it is the same for me

I never knew to be honest people even used magnesium to help them sleep but because of the cocktail of meds you take I would not try it without asking your Doctor or your pharmacist first as there are so many things that can interact with the meds we take

If you do get the ok to try it and you do let us know if it helps :-) x

Hi, I often use magnesium butter with lavender to help sleep. The most effective way to use it is rub a grape size amount on the soles of the feet. I do find I sleep better & feel more relaxed when I wake up. I also use it on my sternum too & it's healed well since surgery (9 months post cabg) I would check with GP regarding tablet form to see if ok with other meds. Hope that helps x

Hi Blindheart. There is a way of taking magnesium that does not overdose the body with more than it needs. Take a bath using epsom salts, magnesium flakes or similar. When in a bath, rather than swallowed, the skin absorbs just as much magnesium as the body needs and absolutely no more. Adding salts once a week or so to bathwater should ensure optimum bodily intake. It softens the water too.

Magnesium can affect how the heart functions. I'm not a medic, I experienced syncope as a result of Lansoprazole adversely affecting my magnesium levels.

As others have suggested, it's wise to check with your doctor/pharmacist before embarking on supplements of any kind to make sure there's no contra-indications with current meds likely to emerge.

I hope this helps.

Hi bridgeit I was very interested to read what you said about Lansoprazole and depleting magnesium levels. Ever since my HA at the end of January I've experienced episodes of jitteriness and feeling out of sorts. I've had meds changed in case it was those but not the Lansoprazole.. I later discovered through buying a new bp monitor that flags up irregular heatbeats that was the cause of my ill feelings. Been reading extensively about arrythmia and low magnesium is often quoted. To this end and many good reviews, I've today purchased some magnesium taurate and hope it makes a difference.

I hope your magnesium supplement works to calm the jitters for you. I do think it's worthwhile having a word with a doctor or pharmacist before swallowing the supplements though, just to make sure extra magnesium is OK for you. Best of luck!

I already take magnesium I'm just swapping to the taurate version as it is supposed to be more relevant for the heart and palpitations.

I use it every day. It works great for me. Get the kind that is specifically for the heart, I think taurine, not sure of the type, ask the chemist. There are several kinds. It occurs naturally in food, they give in high doses to some people in hospital with heart issues, take the recommended daily dose and you will be fine. It will take a while to achieve benefit. There is a lot of literature online that you can read up on it.
