I know many people who do but my understanding is that needs to be taken with care as Magnesium supplements can enhance the effect of the Bisoprolol.

I was on 20mg propranolol and now down to 2.5mg a day. I just got magnesium taurate supplement. Haven't started taking it and would love to know if anyone has tried this supplement while on a betablocker.

Taurate is a help for the heart and one of the best.

separate them by at least two hours as Magnesium can reduce the effects of bisoprolol.

I've been using a magnesium supplement while on 1.25mg bisoprolol with no noticeable issues. Doesn't mean it's safe though, I never thought to look into it!

Edit: after some web searching I'm not concerned.

May I suggest to you that you talk with a pharmacist about your medication, if you haven’t already, particularly discussing your over-the-counter purchases?

Try the pharmacist employed at your doctor’s group of surgeries, failing that your dispensing pharmacist

Yes you can. I do. My blood tests showed that my magnesium was low so my GP prescribed one of the magnesium compounds, but it upset my stomach. I am now on straight two magnesium citrate 119mg/day. I have to buy these because for some reason the GP cannot prescribe straight magnesium. They also have Vit B6 in them, but she says thus is it a problem. I think magnesium is one of those mineral that should only be taken on GP advice.

Citrate is known for effecting the stomach, worst of all magnesium's.

Well it may affect you, but it is the only one that doesn't affect me, with no side effects at all. We all react differently to medications.

I agree with those who suggest a chat with your pharmacist - some types of magnesium supplement have unpleasant (gut related) side effects as well as the possibility of interactions

When my GP was insistent that I take Lansoprazole (antacid) to counter the effects of Clopidogrel, I noted that this could lead to depleted magnesium, but read that there was magnesium in the hard water that I drink, so thought that this might compensate. I gather that magnesium also has slight blood-thinning properties, which I definitely don't need.

My surgeon was also insistent: that I did not need to take Lansoprazole. At my recent TAVI review, the cardiologist endorsed what I was doing - taking it only when I had stomach discomfort.

In the past 18 months I've had many blood tests (my spreadsheet of results for 2024 runs to at least 50 different readings) but never for magnesium.
