Still no results on blood tests.

I Had a heart attack in July this year two stents fitted. I have noticed over the last couple of month my stools are very black and tarry I have been on iron tablets for years now, Hence the colour of my stools but over the last couple of month they have turned tarry. I did read on the internet that one of the meds I am taking can cause a bleed and therefore cause tarry stools. The medication is TICAGRELOR

My heart meds are as follows

Ticagrelor 90mg twice daily with Soluble Aspirin on a morning. Bisoprolol 1.25mg, Empagliflozin 10mg, and Atorvastatin 40mg.

I would just like to ask if anyone on Ticagrelor has suffered tarry stools.

UPDATE ON ABOVE.

had some bloods taken on Friday 26th by a registrar. However these bloods where left in his office over the weekend, and obviously spoilt. I had another set of bloods done on the 30th November. But nothing has come back yet,

I have now been worrying for over a week. How long are these blood tests supposed to take? I am on the NHS app but no results as yet for the tests.

Have you called the Practice and asked if the results are back? My Practice has a Results line to call, if yours doesn't just call the normal number, but after 9am.

I would expect them to be available within a couple of days, but they may need to be reviewed by a GP before the result is available to the patient.

I'm going to call the practice in the morning, I wasn't aware the results are reviewed by a GP before being available on NHS Access.

Did you manage to get an answer?

Different blood tests take different amounts of time. I would have thought checking a stool sample for blood appropriate. It might be worth running past GP.

Hi there I was on ticagrelor for a year and didn’t have any gut problems but I did bruise terribly - though at least that meant I knew it was working. It will make bleeding from any cause worse, so it might be interacting with something else minor to cause more significant bleeding. You should definitely get it checked out. Bill

I use the NHS app to view my results. You have to sign up for it via your GP but they’re usually available within 48 hours

You must chase your GP. As a result of medication I developed a slow bleed and became dangerously anaemic. However your GP cannot discount other more serious causes and should investigate. Your bloods need to register you haemaglobin levels but an endoscopy and a colonoscopy might be needed. Do not delay.

Black sticky stools usually indicate a gastric bleed. So needs attention very soon. I’m puzzled why you are taking iron continuously. I never sell iron tablets to a patient who hasn’t had a blood test in the previous 6 months, as if you’re not anaemic you shouldn’t take iron. I think the combination of iron and Ticagrelor may have triggered a gastric bleed.
