Insurance Renewal Costs

Hello everyone. I had a x4 CABG in June this year and am recovering very well (touch wood). I'm a seasonal ski instructor and regularly work in the Alps (Austria, Italy and Switzerland). I have professional insurance cover whilst teaching but that only covers part of the day. The rest of the day I need to cover myself as a tourist. Does anyone have experience of travel insurance policy price increases after such a CABG? Just trying to get a feel for how bad the mugging's going to be when I get on the phone.

Also any tips on sports-friendly CABG insurers most welcome.

Cheers guys :)

I've never insured for winter sports, but I do insure for water sports. The typical quotes I'm getting for both my wife (no medical issues) and myself (CABGx3) are roughly £400 for annual European cover or roughly £700 for annual worldwide cover, but that does include the minimum £2m+ repatriation cover that some cruise lines demand.

Think you'll find insurance difficult to find until 6 months at least has elapsed after your procedure 🙁

The companies I recommend for travel insurance are StaySure and AllClear. However as previously mentioned you may have th be six months post op to get insurance. Loading is hard to predict. For instance if post-op you were put on Bisoprolol and Atorvastatin they would say you have BP and cholesterol issues. Definitely read the small print as a policy I got years ago (company since merged, taken over, etc.) excluded certain sports including parachuting, skiing and wrestling!

Well done on positive attitude. In August 2015 I also had Quad CABG at age 66. I spent the following winter season at family accommodation in Austria.

To cut a long story short, I insurance was prohibitive, so I relied on the EHIC card for medical cover. It’s successor the GHIC also covers treatment for existing conditions and is free !!

Unfortunately 3 of my grafts failed, and having become more breathless, resulted in spending 9 days in a superb state of the art Austrian regional hospital. Two sessions of angioplasty with total of 7 stents inserted in original arteries. Using the EHIC card for treatment, I had to pay €9 per day for food.

Check the current cover on NHS website.

I also joined the Austrian Alpine Club. Their inclusive insurance with membership of £57 covers mountain evacuation and repatriation to home, if required, (Worldwide cover)

I am also a BASI level 3 ski instructor, but only taught on dry slopes in Scotland. Took me a full year to get back to instructing.

Following Brexit, I am surprised that you are able to work in Europe.

Happy to provide any further info on insurance, but have a look at these options.

Hi Butcharts,Thanks for the very informative reply. I will check out the Austrian Alpine Club and I recollect there are others.

I have dual citizenship hence being able to teach in Eu. Unfortunately a lot of my peer group are not, but that'ds a matter for another forum...

Hi Butcharts. How long after your CABG did your grafts fail? Were the only signs breathlessness or did you also have angina pain? It is almost 11 months since my surgery and I am beginning to be breathless. I also have a slight angina pain down my left arm on cold days. Thanks.
