Struggling to find life insurances

Hi there,

Approx 10 years ago I was diagnosed with ARVC (Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy). At first, I wasn't particularly concerned about life insurance, but over the last 10 years I have married, bought a house, and have a 2 year old son. I have tried a number of times over the last 3 or 4 years to get life insurance, but every insurer has declined me any kind of cover because of my heart condition. Are there any insurers out there who are sympathetic towards people with heart conditions? It concerns me that I may just walk down the street one day and get hit by a bus, nothing to do with my condition, and my wife and child will be left with nothing.

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum

The majority of insurers tend to shy away from offering cover to people with serious health conditions. However, some of the smaller more specialist companies may be more inclined to offer cover. Below is a link the an article by the BHF on the subject. The other option would be to approach an insurance broker

Hi there,

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, I've mostly tried with big big insurers, and after spending weeks of them saying they are sure they can find cover, countless phonecalls, etc, you get a letter saying its all been declined. Its very demoralising. I also tried with a broker once, but they were very much only interested in checking with a couple of big insurers before they lost interest - I assume those were the companies they got the largest commisions from (sorry for being cynical).

Thanks for the link - I'll take a look, and hopefully i can get something sorted!

You're welcome. Some brokers do only go via their favourite companies (good commission rules!)

Here's another one with some links to specialist brokers

Many thanks. I've reached out to a couple of these companies just now. Fingers crossed!

Hi there,

I also have the same issue! Interested to know, did you manage to find any cover in the end?

Hi, try broker called lifesearch. They sorted me out. Obviously expect it to be more money than normal.

Thanks. To be honest, I'd quite happily pay even a fair bit more for a policy, if only someone would offer me one in the first place! Making sure my wife and little boy will be ok if something happens to me would be worth the additional cost.

Thanks

Hi, have you tried just accidental death insurance rather than a health type cover?

Hi there, I haven't tried that - I didn't know it was a thing! I'll look in to it! Thanks!

I faced a similar position we had moved, significantly increased the mortgage and needed life insurance. It was a bit of a nightmare because just before the most stressful house move ever I had my gall bladder removed then 2 weeks later, days before moving got pneumonia. It all absolutely floored me and really focused on how things can change with health very quickly. As such I looked on the BHF website and contacted a specialist broker. I can’t remember the company but he was great it took about 6 months of knock backs as due to numerous health issues over the years it felt like i was ticking every box on the medical forms. Despite this with much perseverance we managed to get life cover. It’s a huge relief and lifted a huge weight from our shoulders.

Why not put the premiums in to a savings account. You will save the fees and costs of the insurance company.

That's a good idea, but it would take years to save enough to cover my mortgage. Ideally I'd like to sort something out sooner in case the worst happens. Thanks for your input though!

Quite agree. You could cover your mortgage, very sensible. If not possible, then possibly use the sums to pay off the mortgage early.
