Oh no, not what you wanted to hear but hopefully this explains all the breathlessness and once sorted, your recovery will be swift. I hope it gets sorted quickly and you’re not in there for too long.
So sorry to read your post, haven’t had this done, but I am sure you will soon be feeling so much better. No wonder you were struggling. Hopefully it won’t be too long before you are home again and continuing with your recovery.
Sorry to hear about your set back Barbara . I did have a chest drain, but because my lung was particularly collapsed . I hope they sort you out soon xx
Hi , thank you . I had chest drains when I woke up from surgery. I'm just wondering what the procedure is like having a drain put in under local anesthetist. Xx
Hi, so sorry to hear you are back in hospital. I think it is not uncommon to get fluid on the lung. that will have been slowing you down for sure. Hope it gets drained and sorted ASAP. xx
Barbara ,make sure the local anaesthetic has worked properly, and tell them if you think it hasn't! and also they are gentle inserting the chest drain , it shouldn't be too bad. Make sure to tell them if it gets painful, and insist they take it gently !I'm such a wimp wondering what would happen, I held onto the nurses arm ! She was very supportive & kind and it wasn't too bad. Just don't be afraid to say if it's hurting. Don't be a Saint Let us know how you get on xx
Hello Barb. I had drains inserted after open heart surgery, under local anaesthetic. The Consultant that performed this was so gentle with me and a nurse assisted mainly by talking to me to keep my mind off things. All I remember feeling was a bit of poking and prodding as they tried to get the drains in. It was difficult for them because I had previously had a drain inserted under general anaesthetic following a biopsy and removal of lymph glands under my arm. The worst part for me was having to lie flat which I find difficult and it makes me anxious. It took a while for the procedure which we didn't start until late into the night but I remember the Consultant staying with me until 11pm and he was back with me at half six to see how I was doing.I've also had fluid drained from my tummy (6 litres in total) and I'm still here and 😃. Good Luck with your procedure. It will make you feel better x
Hi , thank you so much for your reply. I'm really nervous if it's going to be painful.I also do not like laying flat , makes me abit dizzy, maybe I could have 1 pillow.
So it sound like quite a long procedure, how long after are you allowed home ?
I had other problems which kept me in hospital for a long time so I'm afraid I can't really remember. I do remember though the kindness shown by the Consultant and the nurse who tried their very best . You will be fine x
Hi barb, yes I had the same problem ten years ago, just weeks after my triple bypass, both lungs affected, and my scar opening up and becoming infected, loads of puss. I first had the needle in my side took of a liter and a half, but not enough, so had to have a drain overnight, don’t worry not as bad as it sounds they gave me gas and air when it was being inserted, not to bad , and I’m a coward, make sure you ask for it , or they probably won’t bother cause there not having it done. And I had a cough for a while which you think will never go , but it suddenly does , anyway I was fine in the end , it took me a year to get properly better, just let life take you along and don’t try to be a hero, do what ever suits you at your pace, I won’t say good luck as you won’t need it , just lots of love,
Hi good to hear your story. I get instantly sick with gas and air.Dr said because I have soo much fluid I might not feel anything. And afterwards I might feel pain where the tube touches the lung.
He said I would go home with the drain and go back at a later date for them to remove it.
Hi Barb6347 Sorry to hear you back in hospital with fluid build up. Dr's will look after you. Please take care. You're in good hands. All the best for a speedy recovery x x
