Hi

I have taken Magnesium supplements for about 3 years GP and Cardiologist aware and no one told me not to take it .

I take it due to painful muscles caused by another illness.

I’ve painful muscles and don’t know what is causing it. GP just did blood work and said it’s normal.

How did your GP recognises cause of your painful muscles?

I have a illness called Polymyalgia blood test showed some raised inflammation in my blood and after ruling out other things was left with this.

I was at the time bed bound unable to get out of bed or do anything for myself due to severe pain.

The only treatment is steroids but thier are many other things that can cause muscle pain

Hi Rainbow i have used magnesium for both restless leg and sleep for years BUT! that was before my heart attack and stents. I tried it with the heart meds ...ticagrelor, asa, crestor etc and i did not feel well at all. That being said i am quite sensitive. The magnesium was 200mg.

You can increase magnesium through your diet as well. I try including avocados, nuts and flaxseeds in mu diet regularly. I also have regularly Indian chapati made out of whole wheat flour.

Agree you should try and increase Mg through diet, but modern farming practices have sadly depleted the soil of many critical elements, Mg being one, so much of our legumes, greens etc are deficient in some of these elements.

For this reason it is sensible to buy organic foods where available as these should comply with soil association requirements which use rotation etc to protect the soil.

After a triple bypass 2 years ago I suffered a serious electrolyte imbalance & was in ICU for 2 weeks. My potassium level was so low my condition was critical, & the magnesium level was also

very low. Eventually I was well enough to be discharged still taking potassium & magnesium supplements for a while. Whenever I’ve had a blood test since the magnesium level is low & Ive had to go back on supplement so I now take an over the counter magnesium capsule to try to keep the magnesium level up, this was with the agreement of the GP. It does seem to have worked so far.

These replies are interesting. I used to take Mg to help prevent cramp and calcium tablets for my bone health but I stopped taking them when I started taking all the various medications after being diagnosed with HF. I wasn’t sure if taking these supplements was a good idea so I wanted to see how I went without them. I haven’t had any cramps and bone density is much the same so for now I only take cranberry and vitamin D that are not on prescription.

I’ve a friend who is a doctor and after my heart attack he suggested I should take magnesium. I spoke to the nurse at the cardiac rehab centre (my only visit as it was closed due to Coronavirus). She had a look at my bloods during my stay in hospital and said magnesium level was good throughout so not to bother.

In response to my question she also went off to consult colleagues as she’d not previously heard magnesium recommended. She drew a blank.

Magnesium is an essential element, absolutley safe to take. Choose the right one and preferably liquid format. Also, if you take heart meds it is very beneficial to take CoQ10, and for best absorption buy the ubiquinol format, it is way more expensive than CoQ10 tablets, but in my opinion worth it because some people can,t metabolize efficiently.

Confusion reigns. I’ve been taking CoQ10 for many years but was told it doesn’t go together with the new heart meds I’m on. So I’ve stopped (and don’t feel any different). Who do you believe?

I’m just sticking to prescribed meds now. Everything else is a con. Just my opinion.

Hello I'm new here and this is my first post.... the reason I have posted was that I have been reading all your comments about magnesium... I have heard about so many benefits taking this. Can anyone help me out with this. I have had a Mitral valve replacement then had to go back in 2 days after they sent me home from the hospital as an emergency as my lungs and heart had filled with blood. After going to see my cardiologist I was told I'm in heart failure because my heart isn't pumping out as much blood as it should! Sorry for going on but I have never had an opportunity to explain any of this. I am on ramipril I just have no energy at all and 2 years later I am always tired and drained. I was told not to take magnesium? Can anyone help or shine some light on this for me? Sorry for the essay...
