Hi I have been thinking about supplementing magnesium but I have read about it interacting with aspirin which I take on a night, I also take 25mg isosorbide mononitrate and 10mgs atorvastatin any thoughts on this.

I would suggest talking to your medical team or a pharmacist before taking any supplements. My neighbour was taking magnesium and ended up in ICU. Apparently he was slowly poisoning himself as he wasn't magnesium deficient! He's never taken it since.

Thanks, I will I am also getting palpitations and missed beats with angina, going for ecg tomorrow but I have read they aren't always accurate.

I've never heard that ecg's are not accurate. Do you mean they're not accurate in picking up palpitations & missed beats?

I don't think it's correct that ECGs aren't accurate, in that they surely faithfully reproduce the electrical signals that they measure. On the other hand, I would say from my experience that certain feelings of palpitation don't seem to manifest in ECGs in a way picked up by medical staff or algorithms.

I have never heard that ECGs are innacurate. They certainly sometimes don't pick up arrhythmias (various forms of irregular heart beats). My GP suggested wearing a Holter monitor for 3 days. It's a device which continually records cardiac activity.

The cardiologist recommended a device which you can activate when you are experiencing periods of arrhythmia. He said that it was more likely to spot arrhythmia than a Holter.

However, an ECG is a good start. A&E put me on an ECG monitor for 3 hours when the initial ECG did not find anything

ECGs are not inaccurate but if you have intermittent missed beats they may not always pick them up because an ECG is only for a few minutes during which you may not have any erratic beats.. I had ECGs and holter monitor and still nothing picked up until I had a stress test. Even then the test didn't show anything until I sat down afterwards to rest. They had left everything attached and by pure chance I had a long run of ectopics and finally they were able to see where they were coming from. Mine were harmless

You are right went for ecg yesterday gp texted me today and said normal, I was taking my pulse in waiting room before going in and my pulse was ok 70bpm,I said to nurse it will be a waste of time, got home took my pulse and they were missing beats. I knew that would happen.

Very t ypical. Ask for a 3 day holter monitor. 3 days should be long enough to catch some of them. IT is difficult when they are intermittent. I have to have on fitted on Friday but i t's only 24 ho urs. Ectopic beats that only happen now and hen are usually harmless, like a hiccup in teh electrics. I've been having them for 2 0 y ears or more.

Yeah that's right

I never knew that. My husband has missed beats, he has an ICD fitted and the missed beats do show up on the monitoring reports, I assumed they'd also show up on ECG's . Good luck with your appt, maybe you could ask for a 7 day heart monitor.

Yeah thanks I will ask

I've found my local pharmacist is the best source of information about taking supplements and their interaction with your prescription meds.

ECGs are accurate, but only record a specific moment, when Sod's Law says your heart will behave perfectly. A 3-day (or longer) monitor will give more information.

I'm on aspirin. I checked with my gp before starting magnesium and there were no bad interactions. He gave me the go ahead. Either check with GP or pharmacist before starting any supplements.

I have been taking magnesium for years, every doctor I have ever spoken to, regarding my heart medication, is aware I take it and none have given me any precaution to it interacting with medicine or it's potential toxicity, It appears on my medication and supplement files at my doctors and druggist. I feel it's beneficial; but as with all things humans put in their bodies, don't take to much, follow recommendations on the bottle.

Thanks, do you take magnesium same time as aspirin, the reason I want to take magnesium is to help me to sleep, I take rabeprazole before I take aspirin at 8.30 pm because I get indigestion if I don't take ppi beforehand I know ppis stop your body from absorbing nutrients i also take rabeprazole in the morning so that's 40mgs altogether, any thoughts on this.

I use to take it at bed time for the same reason you mentioned, I now take it with my evening meal, yes at the same time as aspirin. I do not use PPI's . What I do do is dissolve the aspirin in warm water when I take it ; I believe it absorbs quicker so less time in the stomach.
