My fiancé is 14 weeks out of triple CABG and has developed toothache in a back molar (the tooth also feels loose)
The timing couldn’t be worse due to the recent surgery and the Covid situation...our dentists website says they are currently only offering telephone advice and prescriptions (as i believe most are.)
Has anyone had an extraction so close to CABG surgery - will a dentist even do this if we can find one? He’s taking aspirin and has been on Amiodarone until recently.
I’m a bit lost as to what to do here??

Can you speak to his surgical team? Teeth problems and heart surgery can be troublesome, perhaps speak to a BHF nurse? we are living in some strange times, otherwise as said 111, GP or your normal dentist to discuss...
Please don’t leave until Monday. In London patients call their dentist and get a code to give 111, this should then get them an appt at an urgent dental centres. Some of those centres are in the dental departments of teaching hospitals so they do have access to other depts.
Call your dentist they will be happy to discuss this all with you and refer as needed. Please don’t leave until Monday.
Whilst nearly all dentists are closed there are a few urgent care dental centres. These are fully equipped with PPE and have the appropriate protocols in place. The nearest to me is in Milton Keynes over 25 miles away. 111 should be able to refer you but if you are in the MK catchment area PM me for the number.
At 14 weeks unless there are underlying issues extraction should not be a problem. The fact he is only in a mini-Aspirin and no blood thinners/anticoagulants is a bonus. Good luck.
Had my cbg x5 April 2018 and had toothache the morning after coming out of hospital.Went to dentist he said it was an infection and gave me antibiotics.I went back when I finished them still in agony he gave me more.Still in pain after a total of 4 weeks I went back.He admitted he really didn't want to take it out because I was on apixaban. I told him I'll take that chance.So he took it out,no problem and no pain.What a relief.So don't worry these are highly skilled professionals,get it sorted.x
Try Sensodyne, Colgate or Oral B. Make sure that there is no whitening in it even if it says sensitive and white. Avoid and buy sensitive only. Don’t rinse after brushing.
Thank you that's what I usually have. But it's only available on prescription & I was told they're not allowed to issue prescriptions at the moment, although they did give a prescription for antibiotics!!
I know, it's very strange as my dentist always just gives it to me. I knew it was only available on prescription as my sister has it prescribed for her. Initially the surgery said I could buy it on line, or at a chemist etc. When I sent them proof from colgate that I needed the prescription that's when they said they can't issue prescriptions!.
Hi Lezzers - just noticed your comment have you thought of using an online Pharmacy, they can issue a private prescription link attached. Its expensive but if you can afford it and want it,! Just a thought simplymedsonline.co.uk/dent...

Thank you Nathan, I did look at that option but was a bit chicken as I'd never used anything that before, wasn't sure if I would be on a genuine site or not.
The site is properly encrypted (touch the padlock in your browser next to the web address) they also have thousands of good reviews on trustpilot. I did use one of the online pharmacies a couple of yrs back but can't remember which one duh. It was for a prescription only skin cream they asked couple of questions online and approved it and all went smoothly.
Update - called the emergency dentist...they are not seeing patients and all there telephone appointments had gone by the time I got to 1st in queue. I did tell them my concerns in regards to his recent bypass but they still couldn’t help.
Then I called 111 and there advice was to call our dentist in the morning (I waited on phone for ages for this piece of advice!)
So there appears to be nothing we can do until we can hopefully speak to someone at our dentists tomorrow.
Same. I had CABG x 4 13 weeks ago and came out of hospital having lost a temporary filling in a baby tooth half way back. It was very sensitive but I had same problem you did with my dentist (lockdown was just beginning and they classed me as vulnerable so would not see me even as emergency) 111 was same. A friend suggested dental hospital in Manchester but at that point I had lost part of tooth and sensitivity had gone so concerns about Covid-19 prevented me following up. I had wanted to save baby tooth not extraction but either way I guess I have to wait until a dentist will see me!
What a mess for you having to navigate. In some areas I understand the UDC work well but even in these areas there are just too many patients needing urgent appts. The answer must be to let us get back to work. The profession was ignored by Matt Hancock but there is much more pressure to let us get back.
The last time I went to an emergency dentist with a abscess I’d left it over the weekend because I couldn’t get an appointment. He had a problem taking it out because it was so infected. He told me I should have gone to A&E. I didn’t think it was that bad, there wasn’t much pain it was just big and this is before the virus. A&E maybe the answer after all there suppose to be fairly empty at the moment.
One of my best friends is a specialist dental surgeon. He sees patients at a couple of the emergency centres that have been set up (in NI).
As he’s explained to me. There’s almost nothing they do in your mouth that doesn’t generate an aerosol spray from your mouth. Hence, risk of transmitting any virus in your lungs, throat etc is very high. After every patient they treat it takes an hour to sterilise the room which means he can see only five or six patients in a long day.
But what this means is that your risk of picking up the dreaded Covid-19 is as near to zero is it can be. It may take a while to get an appointment but do it and feel safe.
Oh god I do hope so as It's rapidly looking like my second course of antibiotics has done very little for my tooth/jaw infection and I'm terrifies. I'm one of those who apart from having heart failure have other health issues which would mean I'd be offed If I caught this damn virus.
Another update - dentist phoned my fiancé and diagnosed him with a abscess (over the phone) and has prescribed 2 different types of antibiotics to be taken at same time starting today.
Surreal experience for me as I had to collect the prescription from the dentists and shout through the locked door to the receptionist, confirming his date of birth etc before the door was unlocked and the prescription passed through at arms length!
Fingers crossed the antibiotics will do there thing as he’s feeling pretty grotty tonight.
